Really good
Jul 2021
This is so interesting and lovely to walk around. Spacious and well thought out with the wall boards giving all the history and information. The sound room with the elements over the seasons was fabulous had to go back to it before I left.

Lovely museum & wander
Jun 2021 • Couples
Fantastic little museum in grounds of the castle. Gives history of island life in enough detail / geography / videos / personal stories / images to be interesting without being overwhelming. Really friendly staff, lovely cafe. Free but donations welcome. Castle website says museum is still closed (Covid), museum don’t have access to update that site, had heard it is definitely open & so glad we persevered to booking, which is being done on eventbrite.

Also, a wander round the castle grounds while you’re here is well worth it. Beautiful woodland, rivers & views. We did a meandering route which took about 2hrs, although if I’d have been in charge of map reading it would probably have taken twice that!!

First class, well worth going to
Jun 2021
Really enjoyed this small museum in the castle. It was a wet blustery day in June, and nothing much to do in Stornoway so we really didn't know what to expect in the museum, but it was first class. Loved the stories of island life, the presentation was fabulous, huge photos on the wall were amazing (particularly the one taken by Tony, our B & B host!) . The staff polite and two lovely cafes. The walks around the castle grounds were lovely, whichever gardening team looks after the castle grounds, well done, fabulous! A few more signposts would be appreciated though, quite a few of us got lost!

Jun 2021 • Couples
staycation Scottish Government said, so I came. to see. Lewis chess men, but despite islands being being in level zero museums are SHUT.

However the museum coffee shop Open.
oh And Museum gift shop open.figure that out!

tourists are not welcome anywhere, just their cash.
and it appears locals scamming furlough from the Uk Chancellor is easier than working for islanders.

mainland Scotland tourist attractions and museums are all open.

Excellent small museum
Jun 2019
I really enjoyed this museum: The room with sound and pictures really gets you immersed in the island's scenery. I sat through it 3 times. The part about the tragedy of the Iolaire was very moving and the general history of the island was portrayed very well. But of course the WOW factor was the excellent presentation of the Lewis chessmen with a really first class commentary, almost a poem, which I'm delighted to be able to be able to hear again on Utube. I enjoyed walking through Lews Castle too - Grand rooms.

Small but very informative
Jun 2019 • Couples
This is small museum by most standards, yet it is so full of fun exhibits and helpful staff that I would recommend it as worth visiting. The museum has the Lewis Chessmen plus other interesting artifacts related to the Hebrides. Nice little gift shop and cafe on the premises as well.

Local History

A great place to discover the cultural history of the Island. All displays are in Gaelic and English and there is an opportunity to learn some Gaelic words.

Fascinating to see how the lives of the islands have changed and how some traditions have been maintained.
