Home away from home

Loved the local accent, Almost couldnt believe how much it sounded like our own! Made me feel right at
Home.

Maybe renaming the island would be and idea.

The little isle of england.

Seems fitting.

Great apartment in Lews Castle - bright, fresh & airy contemporary feel
Jul 2021
3 bedroom deluxe apartment in Lews Castle - a great refurbishment. Bright, airy, clean, newly refubished apartment with great views over the harbour of Stornoway. Great beds (thank you!!), good fresh crisp white linen, new carpets, contemporary stocked kitchen, bathrooms fine. This is well done.

DONT expect a " Castle" its more old house converted yo conference room
Jun 2021
Really very disappointing for a castle, and a let down for guests . No reception or bar just a mid size old house with a cafe, that's open for the public to wander through. Not much to see several of the larger rooms made into venue / conference rooms which is not exciting. Room full abandoned catering equipment wrapped in cling film and loos in the cafe.
Museum next door shut but gift shop open and cafe open, in covid level zero. Seems furlough pays better than work in Stornoway.

We're sorry to hear that you felt your experience didn't quite meet your expectations. Our ground floor public rooms usually receive such wonderful feedback, especially when coupled with the incredible exhibits found in the museum, and the wealth of informative signage helps guests to imagine themselves in era's gone by when the castle was first constructed. As you mentioned, the ground floor public rooms are also used for spectacular weddings and events, and as we happily return to being able to provide these services to our patient brides and grooms, there can be a little crossover as we rotate our catering equipment as we are exceptionally busy. We do hope however that we can welcome you back again in the future, once all restrictions are lifted.

We only visited to take some photos of the castle. Nice grounds and a great place to sit and watch the harbour.

Rooms with a view
Jun 2021
Booked this visit for last year, but had to postpone to June 21. Lovely superior self-catering apartment on first floor had wonderful view over the harbour to Stornoway from both living room and bedroom. Huge double bed was extremely comfortable, as was the L-shaped sofa in the living area. Kitchen was well-equipped, and there was an explanatory booklet for the underfloor heating and the kitchen equipment, although the microwave was awkward to use for one used to a more basic, dial-turning model, and the same could be said about the induction hob. The en-suite bathroom was spacious enough to house a bath, but had only a wet-room type shower with a miserable curtain; for that money I'd expect at the very least an enclosed overhead shower of decent power. In addition the floor drainage was so slow that the floor tended to be awash by the end of a normal shower. One of the bedroom windows was missing the brass hook for the window pole, so opening it was challenging. We didn't use any of the restuarant or bar facilities in the castle. The manager was helpful and friendly.

Very poor value stay
May 2021 • Friends
We stayed at Lews Castle the last night of our holiday and I was expecting something special. However the room was extremely small and had only one small window which looked onto air handling plant. The furnishings were of a good standard and the bed was comfortable but the room in entirety had a bed, a small stool, a sink in the corner (no room for it in the en-suite) and some built in storage space for clothes at the entrance.
I know that what you get won’t always look like the advertising picture but the reality of the room was light years away from the picture and fell far short of what I would expect for nearly £300 a night.
Unless you can be sure of the quality of your room I suggest you save your money and stay somewhere else.

Thank you for your feedback, we're sorry that your stay didn't quite match your expectations on this occasion. Our team endeavour to ensure our descriptions are as accurate as possible on our website and third party platforms, quite clearly stating that our 'Standard Bedroom' options are for the overnight traveller who does not require kitchen facilities or a view, merely a luxurious base camp where they can get a wonderful nights sleep, in the heart of Stornoway. Additionally, we always make guests aware that our imagery is indicative of the standard of the interior furnishings at the Castle, and may not necessarily be an exact replica of the layout of the room. Guests always have the option to upgrade to a different bedroom or apartment, and due to the unique layout of the Castle, some accommodation affords more scenic views than others. Our team are always available to help guests navigate the bespoke nature of each of the rooms, pairing them with exactly what they're looking for.

Good to visit.
May 2021 • Couples
We really enjoyed visiting Lews Castle. The Museum is very nicely done and it was good to see
some of the Lewis chessmen. Walking round the grounds was well worth it. Views of Stornoway were excellent
(We had a sunny late afternoon). All in all well worth a visit…we would go again.

Insist on a room with a view
Jun 2021
Firstly let me state that we booked 3 days for £750 - at £250 a day that’s about the same price as a 5 star hotel in Edinburgh. As you can imagine that’s the sort of luxury we expected.

There is no reception on arrival - we found the duty manager (that implies there are other staff - there aren’t) - a helpful young man call Alan took us to our room. He told us there was no bar (despite this being post bar lockdown and being highlighted on the website). So - no food or drinks in the building expect for the cafe that opens after normal breakfast.

We thought we had booked a self catering room but apparently our £250/night didn’t cover that and we ended up with a small but nicely furnished room with a coffee machine. Be aware that nearly everything is closed on Mondays in Stornaway. The view from the single window was of the roof next door. See photo with the slate roof.

On complaining we were moved to a single bedroom flat - nicely furnished with some coffee sachets, 3 sugar sachets, no kitchen towel, no kitchen scissors. You can get better amenity packs at a Premier Inn.

The big issue was….the view again. This time we had 3 windows none of which had a view over anything other than exterior walls and and a roof. Combined with a nasty buzzing noise all night. See the pictures we took from each window.

It was so depressing we checked out a day early.

We did reach out to Natural Retreats but they avoided commenting on value for money and the views.

Worth £250/night? No, maybe £125 tops.
