Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden deep in a lost Dorset combe among tumbling hills and unspoiled countryside. Fifteen acres of gardens descend from the croquet lawn, through the formal topiary down to the wild garden. Mapperton is the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, and welcomes visitors to the Gardens from 1 March to 31 October, to the House from 2 April to 31 October, and to the Sawmill Cafe from 2 April to 31 October.

Narrow lanes and lovely country views, eventually I arrived at Mapperton House, set in a beautiful quiet valley. The House tour is organised into groups, so we began looking at the garden until our entry time arrived. The ground floor rooms are panelled and many...More

What a wonderful place - totally without the sterile and tourist-driven feel you get from National Trust properties. A peaceful and relaxing visit with friendly and helpful staff.

Spent a lovely couple of hours at Mapperton yesterday. The garden was open to view the snowdrop collection (chiefly in the Spring Garden). On a cold but sunny day it was a delightful experience. The main gardens, laid out in the 1920s, show a clear...More

We were only able to view the gardens as the guided tour wasn't suitable for our 1.5 year old who was unlikely to cooperate! The estate is undeniably beautiful but I can't help the feeling that it's not a polished product. From the moment we...More

Even though it was late autumn when I visited it was still worth the effort. While the beds were past their prime the autumn colours were beautiful; and because we were out of season we were able to enjoy the gardens in solitude. There is...More

Joined one of the guided tours. Both guides had a wealth of interesting information about the house and its owners. We enjoyed a good lunch after the tour in the cafe.
