Beach is excellent, and not overcrowded.
Campsites along the beach are in a great location - but they are on top of one another.
The other campsites in Live Oak Campground at the park are very private from each other - but many are backed by Highway 174, and that means the street noise is present from 7 am until the evening hours. And if you are staying at Live Oak Campground, you cannot visit the beach area between 8 pm and 6 pm, because that whole beach area is closed and locked (beach site campers get a passcode).
The park's Environmental Center is very attractive and educational.
Be cautious about which season to visit - avoid the buggy season, from about May to September.

This is a excellent place to ride your bikes on trails or on the beach! The entry fee is $8 per person. There are multiple parking areas and plenty of different types of camping from rustic to RV sites. The park is open from 8am-6pm daily. On our visit we had enough time to explore all the trails and spend some quality time on the beach! This is a great place for families, couples, or singles looking to get out into nature. We packed snacks and plenty of water during our time at this special state park. The staff is very friendly and the park is very clean. They also have cabin rentals available. All the trails are very easy to ride bikes on without steep inclines. We had a great day and will be back for another outdoor beach adventure! Thank you to everyone who keeps this park clean for all travelers!

A clean, well-tended 1.5 mile-long beach with wide swash zone welcomes you to rest after visiting the exhibits at the Edisto Environmental Learning Center in another part of the park (there are really three main areas of this park). Restrooms are available at the Env. Center, and there are more near the beach. I think there is a store at the beach as well, but it closes at 4 pm these days so I missed checking it out the day we visited, No trouble parking but they charge a use fee for the park areas. Pay at any of the entrances.

Now I know we all love our dogs. I left mine home knowing that we would be gone biking or beach walking and didn't want to chance my dog barking while we were gone and disturbing my neighbors. My gosh!! This place is a dog park! Trust me people, your dogs bark when you are gone. Many bark when you are home! This park is clean with a very friendly staff. A special shout out to Sally. I will never come here again. So many dogs and inconsiderate owners with no concern for others enjoyment.

We were able to upgrade to a beach side campsite due to a cancellation. The other campground looked nice but without another vehicle or bikes it was way too far from the beach.
Our site was amazing. We could hear the roar of the waves just over the dunes. Dogs need to stay on a leash but are welcome. The beach is loaded with shells and another camper found something that appears to be a mastodon molar.
Restrooms are close and clean. It was a half mile to a mile to several restaurants, but nice options. The Bi-Lo is under construction but will soon reopen.
There is no laundry on the Island. Dump station is out on Rt 174.
Great place for a few days, but bring bug spray.

This review is for tent camping in the Primitive Tent Camping area. Horrific. The sites are not close to the beach. You have to drive to the beach. Large tree trunk roots are impossible for the elderly or toddlers. The mosquitoes in April are unbearable, even with spray. You have to lug your supplies, including your tent, to the site, down a winding trail. I was in site 128. The town is devoid of decent restaurants and those that are there, are extremely expensive for the poor quality and rude service. I've camped all over the country. This was the worse. I believe it is done to drive out tent camping in favor of RVs. Worse case, to drive down the reputation of this state park, so homes can be built.

We did not pay to go into Edisto Beach State Park, instead opting to go to the Botany Bay Plantation Wildlife Management Area. However, there was a small portion of the park where we could go for free and we made a short visit to that area.
Perhaps on a future visit we may go to the main part of the park but I think that we made the right choice with Botany Bay!

Unless you want to hike trails there is nothing here to do.
We felt like $8 per person was a ridiculous amount of money.
You can walk the beach at any public access on Edisto Island for free.
Unless we missed something this was a huge waste of money. We were very dissappointed.

We had site 21 in the Live Oak campground. Lots of shade and very quiet. Clean and well-kept. The sites across the road had a great view out over the marsh. This park is spread out considerably along the main road (Hwy 174) so you definitely need some type of transportation to get around. The Environmental Learning Center (good for a rainy day but not very well kept - lots of empty aquariums and exhibits that look like high school science fair projects) is down the road to the west and the beach is down the road to the East. The dump station (three lanes) is across the road just adjacent to the Live Oak campsite entrance. The little town has quite a few restaurants and some shopping, including a small Food Lion grocery. Would recommend Whaley's (kind of a locals dive bar/food shack) and SeaCow for good sandwiches and fries.

Maybe I have too high expectations. This is a pleasant beach complete with exchange , rest rooms etc. Loads of shells and fossils to find. Pleasant lady at the gate. Pricey admission. No military discount. Parking was loaded quickly. This beach and town want to be Pawleys Island or Holden Beach / Bird island. Its a weak imitation. The town folk here are not pleasant, and the beach here seems to attract people of the same sort. Disappointed. Wanted to shell and fossil hunt, wanted to enjoy the beach. Instead got drunken sheninigans , not kid friendly people on the beach and left after an hour.

Yes, as long as they are on a 6 foot or shorter leash.

I am traveling in a 28’ RV and wonder if there’s an availability in the campground during early January

For off peak season (before Memorial Day, and after Labor Day), it shouldn’t be hard to get a spot. You can reserve it online on the SC state parks website.

We went at the end of June of 2018. We did the nighttime turtle walk. It was very informative and we actually got to see a turtle laying her eggs.

We are camping in our motor home for several days. We do not have a toad. Is there a rental car office anywhere near the campground? Thanks so much
Written 29 January 2018
I don't recall seeing a rental car provider anywhere on the island. The nearest place might be in Hollywood or West Ashley. You'd probably have to stop there first and pick up the car, but that's a guess.
