You can bike, hike, or drive here when at Fort Stevens. Love being in the history. Lots of information and gratitude. There is a peace rock here. Great place for families

Great place to learn a little history and walk around. It was green grass all around. It is a must see especially for any history buff or military historian.

History Visit

A very interesting place to visit, one of the exsisting forts along the waest coast. A great place to spend an entire day to see al that is here. Stay away from the Elk, this is their park and we are the visiters.

Spontaneous Visit

Every person we encountered was so nice and helpful beginning with the volunteer at the gate. The museum is very nice. We only wish we had been there on a day when tours were available. We’ll go back on a tour day.

Historical facts.

A fun stop for the families. See what remains of Oregons part in world war II. The concrete bunkers are fun to explore. Bring a flashlight. This battery was fired on by Japanese submarines during the war June 21st 1942. Bike paths everywhere though Fort Stevens too.

Military History
Jun 2019 • Family
Very interesting site of concrete structures used for about 40 years -- 1904-44 -- by the military. You can wander throughout the structures, going up stairs, ramps, and through many rooms. There are picnic tables and nice grassy area to run around. We heard elk nearby, too. One of the many stops in Fort Stevens Park.

Remember the Battery Russel?
Jul 2018 • Couples
We came after 6 P.M. We paid our 5$ and explored the Battery Russell. It used to be a fort.

There were lots of rooms. We could go anywhere.

Everything was made of concrete.

However the Battery Russel was made of metal and it could shoot quite far.

This is part of Fort Stevens Park. I was functioning from 1904 to 1944.

Worthwhile to see!

My family enjoys visiting these old structures. This one, you are able to still climb up on it and enter into the rooms. Watch your step, there are drop offs, dips, and sudden stairs. To get up to the battery, you can climb a long set of stairs or you can walk up the unpaved road to the left. The road is a better choice if you have mobility issues.

Battery Russell Area History
Mar 2019 • Solo
Battery Russell tells a story of a life past. A time when it played a crucial role in perceived threats against our nation. Many of these locations are decaying and going away so take an opportunity to meander through history before it is gone.
