Our flight out was cancelled so needed something to do, so we went to the zoo. It was ok. I've seen quite a few better. Some worse.

In 2014, I photographed animals (my profession) at zoos all over North America. Portland (my home town) had sadly one of the poorest ones. Save your money and go to San Diego's state-of-the-art, utterly terrific zoo. Portland is a "skip this one" except for maybe toddler's with wealthy parents.

My family and I have always loved this zoo. Small, easy to navigate, well laid out. It’s been a few years since I have been, and it was disappointing at the lack of animals, and the signs saying sick or tired animal ( means no show). Being an animal lover though, what we did see was sweet, especially the cats. My complaint would be, at a food cart, being told there was no change for a cash purchase, so I get to donate .50 more cents, on top of paying $24 dollars, and my sister paid $ 8 to get her grandson a little arm tattoo, which we thought at first was part the child experience as there was no sign posted with prices. So after paying for parking and of course visiting the gift shop, it’s a little spendy. Will I go again, of course.

I'm an annual pass holder at the Oregon Zoo, and I'd give the Oregon Zoo a 3.5 if I could, but it certainly doesn't deserve a four. I've visited many zoos, including being a member at the San Diego Zoo for four years, and visited it over 50 times.

The Oregon Zoo is relatively clean, but honestly does not have very many animals on exhibit any more. It had been a few years since I've visited and was completely disappointed with the Polar Bear exhibit. Honestly, it was a much better exhibit before the remodel.

Many animals were taken away, including quite a few bears (including Sun Bears), the Elk and the wolves, among many other animals in order to expand the elephant area, mainly putting in a pool and a new building, which was nice, but a serious expense in tax payer money and once again, many animal exhibits were removed because of it.

The penguin exhibit used to be quite a bit of fun, and there were various penguin species on exhibit. Now there is only one species, The Humboldt Penguin, and there were maybe 30 of them on exhibit. Not nearly as good as it used to be.

I can go on and on, but in reality, the Oregon Zoo has NOT improved at all. As a patron visiting the zoo, it is now mediocre and that's after getting hundreds of millions of Oregon tax payer funds. Doesn't make sense to me at all.

You can very easily see the entire zoo in about an hour and a half if you take it slowly. Repeat visits leave a lot to be desired.

I can understand people giving it a 4 because of local pride, but it absolutely doesn't even come close to a 5 if you've visited other zoos.

Fabulous modern zoo with wonderful paths. I was able to see so much, including habitat. I especially loved the eagles, the river otters, and the tarantulas. I was able to see a tarantula eating! So cool. And so convenient because the TriMet stops right there.

Very nice zoo. It’s set up so you can walk through the whole thing on a very cute ‘trail’. Clean, well maintained. We had a great time.

Fantastic zoo, but easy to lose your way.
I went here with my 8 year old grandson and we loved this zoo. The walking among the forest and the animal enclosures were great. The carousel was wonderful, but the train ride was not worth the money or the experience.

The staff there were very helpful in directing us when we got lost multiple times.

Definitely worth the visit.

Great zoo. It seems to have been recently renovated and feels new. My view is that zoos are there to preserve, research and breed endangered species; educate and inspire us to admire and preserve our fellow creatures and this zoo does this well. Most of the habitats are decent sized although I was concerned about the raptors not being able to "spread their wings". Some people have complained that the renovations mean they can't see the animals. This was not our experience at all. It was a busy day ( lots of school trips) but they seem to have gone to great pains to provide good habits whilst facilitating the viewing experience. We have seen a lot of good zoos and felt this was a good experience - enough to see but not exhausting.

I was personally disappointed in my zoo experience. We got there a half hour after it opened. Several of the exhibits were empty, and 2 animal activities were cx the day of my visit. As you have to buy a timed ticket ahead of time, I was stuck going the day I showed up, as there was no refund option. The park felt dirty, several school groups were running around, going behind barriers they were not supposed to. When I tried to get food from a cart/stall that was parked along one of the walkways, the server was so incredibly slow that I nearly walked away. The table we sat at with our food was sticky. Just overall, not a great experience.

The enclosures are made for the comfort and health of the animals but somehow that makes the hunt all the more charming, beautifully landscaped, a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
