- BusterElgin, United KingdomA wonderful place to visit.Popped in while passing en route north. Didn't have any expectations of what we'd find. What we got was a gem of a place that delayed our trip by almost a full say. Birdlife in center area are fascinating. The huge area open to all types of environment from River to field to woodland, is spectacular. Severe flooding did nothing to dampen our visit. Staff are absolutely delightful, helpful and really good fun to talk with. The café is a cracker with the most delicious home style cooked food, lovely staff again and a great atmosphere.Hi there, Thanks so much for your review and lovely comments. We're so pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit and ended up staying for the day! It's great also to hear you enjoyed talking to our team and found the cafe food delicious - we'll certainly pass on your comments to the rest of the team! - NKayNorth East England, United KingdomWWT Washington reviewCame today for our first visit. Live 25 minutes away and wish we had visitors before now. My daughter is a blue Peter badge holder therefore she got in free. We arrived just in time for the otter talk however there was a school trip there and my daughter is autistic therefore we just looked at the others through the screen where it was a little quieter and left before the talk. We didn’t see the flamingos, not sure if they have an inside area. We did see many other birds and my daughter loved sitting in Hawthorn Wood Hide. Where we spotted lots of different birds including a woodpecker. We will definitely returnHello - thank you so much for your review and lovely comments. We're so please to hear you enjoyed your visit and found there was lots of wildlife to see, including the otters. We do hope you come back again to listen to the otter talk when it may be a little quieter. Our flamingos are out most of the time but there are improvement works going on in their enclosure and it is likely if you didn't see them that they were inside, hopefully this was communicated to you on arrival and via signage? It's great to hear you ventures to Hawthorn Wood hide and managed to see lots of birds, the great-spotted woodpeckers are some of our favourites too! Thanks again, we look forward to seeing you again soon!Written 11 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 March 2024
- SuzyMP72Billingham, United KingdomWHAT A FAB DAY OUT !!What a great day out for anyone of all ages. It’s a proper hidden gem in the middle of an industrial estate !!! Free parking upon arrival then a hop skip and a jump down to the visitor centre. It can be quite hilly in parts. Once we were ‘checked in’ we (1 x adult + 1 x 9 year old girl) turned right out the visitor centre after having picked up some bird spotting sheets and a pencil and got straight into the day. The whole park is broken up into little sections and the map is so easy to follow. We certainly made it to the otter and pink flamingo talks. There’s an on site cafe but we took a cool box with picnic bits in to eat back at the car. We had a thoroughly lovely day just the two of us and we’ll certainly be back !!!!!!!! Loved it.Hello, thank you for your review and very kind words. It's great to hear that you enjoyed your visit and found there was lots to do (including our spotter guides!) We're pleased you found the map easy to use and enjoyed the otter and flamingo talks. You are more than welcome to bring a picnic to eat on site if you prefer, but of course this is up to you! - 733cjm17Newcastle upon Tyne, United KingdomBrilliant day outWe’ve just had such a great day here that I felt compelled to write a review. I visited with my two children, aged 6 and 3, and we were entertained from 10.30 until after 4pm. A great day from start to finish - otter and flamingo feeding/talks (just the right length to keep little ones engaged), friendly staff, great cafe and shop, plenty of picnic spots, fab park (water play was a big hit), spotless toilets, not too busy, all really good value.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 August 2024
- maria bSunderland, United KingdomCostly Day OutThe last time I visited was a number of years back with my children. At that time I found it a more natural environment with lots of different species of birds, This time with my grandchildren it seemed more family orientated with lots of play activities which some might think a good thing, . There is a Children In Need garden which is at odds with the cost of admission. However as for the birds, there seemed apart from the beautiful flamingoes nothing but a couple of black swans and ducks everywhere. There was not that much wildlife including the insect garden that was devoid of insects, There are plenty of picnic areas though in which I recommend to take your own food as the prices in the cafe are extortionate. The time we spent with the kids we might as well have gone to the local park for free to play and feed the ducks. It was a costly day out.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 August 2024
- Great day out, terrible cafe. The place itself is a lovely spot. It's well priced in the main with lots of little walk ways, hides and a huge array of birds to spot. It also has a little park at the end to finish off. I hasxa really good visit and so did my kiddo. My only annoyance is the absolute disgrace of the pricing in the cafe. I know places like this always overcharge but they should be ashamed to be perfectly honest. Other than that, cracking. Just bring your packed lunch.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 September 2024

I am so lucky, to live close to WWT Washington, 15 minutes in the car and I'm in my happy place.
No matter how many times I visit, I see something new, often depending on the time of year/season. I've been really lucky to see the kingfisher, a couple of times.
WWT caters for people of all ages, The site is "disability friendl. It is a photographers paradise! I must have 1000's of photos, taken over the years.
The staff are lovely and really helpful
The food is lovely, in the cafe, though soft drinks are quite expensive, but all proceeds go back to WWT.

Visited the Wetland Centre on a quiet Saturday afternoon with my partner and two month old son expecting a nice little scenic walk with lots to see. Unfortunately this was anything but the case. After grabbing a coffee from the cafe and venturing out, we very quickly came to learn there was little to see and do. The "bug garden" was completely devoid of life, the "water lab" seemed like a pointless structure aside from coloured perspex sheets making the sunshine appear a lovely colour inside and many of the areas advertised were closed to the public with locked gates, and thus, inaccessible. The only highlight (if you could call it that) was being able to walk amongst the black swans and ducks in the central area of the reservation. Many of the attractions were missing, such as the cranes en route to the gift shop/exit. What should have been a gorgeous scenic walk with lots of animals and birds to see turned into a half hour disappointing amble before unanimously and begrudgingly heading back to the car, having spent approximately £20 entry fee for the privilege. I appreciate we visited in the winter and this would explain the lack of wildlife in there, but this should have been stipulated upon entry and visitors charged accordingly. I'm anything but frugal but in these times of rising costs and appreciation of value for money, I couldn't help but leave with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Hello,
We're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your visit to our centre and reserve. Our team on arrival should have given you a welcome to our centre and outdoor areas so you know what was available for you to see and do, with the option of a map to help guide you. Please let us know if this wasn't the case.
We're very saddened to hear your feedback on the lack of wildlife to see, as with over 300 birds around our inner areas as well as over 100 acres of wild reserve to explore, we're sorry to hear you didn't manage to see many. Our family of otters are also visible regularly and we have two daily commentated feeds included as part of the admission cost for visitors to attend.
Our family of cranes are on display in front of the centre building at the moment and are usually always visible if you're able to spend a moment or two to enjoy the scene and spot them, along with the barnacle geese and white-fronted geese that live alongside them.
As you've mentioned, you visited during winter time (January) during a particularly cold and frozen weather period, bugs and insects will not be out as I'm sure you'll understand these are reliant on warmth and sunlight to emerge.
Our waterlab features are also currently switched off for winter as they can freeze, which can cause the mechanisms to break. We're sorry if this caused some inconvenience for you on the day.
There are currently no areas of site closed to the public, so we'd be keen to hear what areas you found inaccessible during your visit, and we'd also be keen to hear what attractions you found were missing to see if something has perhaps happened on the day that was out of the norm.
We really do strive to offer a wonderful experience for our visitors and as a charity we are massively grateful to you for your visit and feedback. We're sorry our site wasn't for you, but I hope you'll appreciate the conservation work we are doing and that you have, in some way, supported that.
Do feel free to get in touch with us directly to discuss anything further - info.washington@wwt.org.uk. Many thanks

Paid £23.95 to take my two grandchildren for the afternoon as 2 hours is about long enough.
Booked on line which was easy enough to do but we were greeted by the most grumpiest member of staff who even counted us out loud, there were 3 of us! Not sure if these people are volunteers but come on at least offer people a smile & engage with your customers!
I later discovered that there was an activity sheet the children could have completed during their visit but we weren’t even offered one - terrible!
The flamingos were enchanting but we even had to google why they were standing on one leg as very little educational material on display!
The compost toilet is definitely a big no no !!!
One scoop Ice cream £5.80 for two cones & a further £15 spent in the gift shop to save the day !!!
Very little to do, with very few attractions other than the flamingos & otters.
This was our first visit but we definitely won’t be back.
Save your money. It might be ok for an adult walk but if you have kids save your money & go to Joes pond, Herrington Country Park or James Steel Park which are all free!

Hello there,
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback - it's incredibly important to us and much appreciated.
We're very sorry to hear that your visit did not meet the high standards that we strive for and hope to consistently deliver.
Our friendly staff and warm welcome are something we pride ourselves on (as evidenced in the many recent five star reviews below) but it's clear that your experience fell short of this.
Our Wetlands Explorer logbook activity (the sheet that you've mentioned) and our staff-led sessions (including pond dipping, den building and animal tracking) are also running all summer long and should have been flagged up to you upon arrival. We apologise that this didn't happen. Can I ask what date you visited please so that we may address this?
Our composting toilet is checked at least twice daily but obviously things beyond our control can happen, causing a drop in standards. Such an incident did happen on 27 July and two team members immediately dealt with the situation once we were made aware (which may be what you're referring to, if that was the day you visited? Without specifics we can't be sure!).
We understand that you were unhappy about the secondary spend at the ice cream kiosk and in the gift shop but hopefully it may help to know that the money does directly contribute to the work that we do as a wetland conservation charity both in the UK and internationally. Thank you for your support :-)
With regards to having little to do (although we agree that the otters and flamingos are fab!), we know that not everybody will enjoy everything we have here on site but hand-feeding our ducks and geese, watching woodland birds on the feeders at Hawthorn Wood hide, seeing young common tern and shelduck exploring Wader Lake, using the hands-on elements in the Waterlab and our two children's play areas are certainly elements we know lots of people have fun doing.
We hope that we've fully addressed your concerns here but if not then please don't hesitate to get in touch with us directly and we'll be happy to have a chat and help further. Our email is info.washington@wwt.org.uk and the phone number is 0191 416 5454.
Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Called here for something different to do as my son loved it when he was a toddler.
He’s 7 now and came with my daughter, 1, and my friend and her 2 year old and baby.
It’s good for having a wander around in the fresh air and seeing the various birds. We listened to the otter talk which was informative and good. The flamingos are lovely. Plenty of space for walking around. Lots of huts around the lake for bird spotting.
Nice play park - mud kitchens with sand were a big hit.
I would highly recommend bringing a packed lunch as the food was extortionately expensive in my opinion.
£6.50 for a toastie, £7.95 for a jacket potato. Average quality.
The kids hotdog cost £5.95 and was a sausage rather than hotdog which my son wouldn’t eat so I ended up buying the ‘adult hotdog’ for him.
Just ridiculous to be honest.
I would have been tempted to get a yearly pass but I just don’t think it’s worth the price tag. Today cost over £70 including the food. Unless you’re a real bird enthusiast you can do similar for free, for example around Penshaw monument with ponds, paths and parks.
I think this has potential to be a really exciting day out for families but just isn’t. No indoor area for the kids anymore in the discovery bit.
Can’t feed the birds because of the flu.
I just think it could be more engaging. A trail to follow with characters to find? An interactive area inside? Staff running activities? I don’t know.

Hi there,
Thanks so much for taking the time to feed back on your visit.
Your comments on our talks are much appreciated and we're pleased you enjoyed your walk around the lake. We're also pleased your family enjoyed the nature kitchen in the play area.
Your comments about our cafe menu will be fed back to our catering manager, so thank you for those.
Unfortunately we are limited by space indoors. Our Discovery Centre is an education space which has been dedicated to schools and special events for the last 3 years. We are all about being outside rather than indoors, and as a nature-based charity we try to encourage this as much as possible so visitors really appreciate what being outdoors has to offer.
Handfeeding isn't possible due to the risk of bird flu in our collection birds. While we understand this can be frustrating, we must take steps to protect our animals in every way we can. We will be looking for alternative engagement activities in the future as we know this is an exciting part of a visit, so please keep an eye out.
If you visited throughout the summer, we had a range of daily activities taking place for families to get involved in (pond dipping, creative crafts, art sessions, minibeast hunting and many more). These sort of events are ran over each school holiday period and provide visitors a variety of nature-themed activities to enjoy as part of their day with us.
We also have a selection of spotter guides to search for a multitude of wildlife while here available for visitors to pick up and enjoy free of charge. Our Drawn to Water: Quentin Blake trail was also running during the summer with a guide and trail markers around our site.
I'm sorry to hear you feel our annual membership is not worth the cost. As a charity, your visit really does mean a lot to us and helps us to support conservation for a multitude of exotic ducks, geese, swans, flamingos and otters - all of which you wouldn't be able to see elsewhere.
Our membership scheme (which works out at £8.75 per month for a 2 adult family with up to 6 children, with other options available) is a cost effective way to be able to support our conservation work (in a similar way to charities such as WWF) but actively see the work and animals you are supporting.
As a member you can also take part in all of the activities held throughout the year with no additional cost. If this was something you'd be interested in doing please do let us know.
Once again, thank you for your feedback and we hope you visit again in the future and perhaps attend some of our events to really help make the most of your visit.

Last visited over 20 years ago and was unimpressed then. It was the same this time, nothing has significantly changed other than there seem more paths and wooden hides. There are quite a few ducks and the odd unusual bird but hardly the numbers I would have expected. Flamingos seen in the distance were good and so were the 3 playful otters but really that was it. Not one insect seen in the bug house area. Dragged out the visit for 1 .5 hours to try and get something for the very high cost of the entry fee, and the only time my grandson was happy was on the slide in the tired looking play area. So much more could be done, like having someone showing the baby chicks to children and letting them be held etc instead that area called ‘The Duckery’ looked almost abandoned. As others have previously said, ducks can easily be seen and fed for free at local parks. We will not return and unless you are an avid bird watcher I don’t recommend a visit.

Hi, thanks for your review.
We're sorry to hear you had an unsatisfactory visit. We will feed your comments on to the rest of our team.
Our wetlands are home to 300+ birds and our Asian short-clawed otter family and although it sounds like you saw some of them perhaps you didn't manage to see them all. Our exhibits are created to give a natural feeling and allow our birds the space they need to thrive - something which is not possible if too many birds are present in one area. Many of our collection birds are non-native species from around the world and you wouldn't be able to see these particular species at local parks, for example.
Our wild reserve sees hundreds of birds of varying species visit our site to feed or rest and the hides provide great views of many of these birds.
We are hoping to update our insect hotel, but we hope you managed to see lots of insects around the flowers of our site.
Our duckery in September is nearing the end of breeding season and so there are not many young birds in there as they have all grown and been added to the rest of our collection - we will look at our interp boards to see if we can make this more clear for visitors. Unfortunately due to the nature of the species of birds and the endangered status of many of them, allowing visitors to hold them is incredibly risky to the birds health and wellbeing. As a conservation charity this is something we aren't able to offer.
Many thanks

The Wetland Centre is well worth a good visit for a lovely circular walk of great interest and beauty, with lots of different birds a major but not the only feature, it was my first time seeing European Cranes not on the tv, also loved watching the asian short clawed otters, and the quietness and stillness of the scene was a very special experience - well worth a visit out of season for this. Still late autumn colour even in early December. Loved watching all the small birds on the bird feeders.
The staff were friendly and very informative and we enjoyed delicious food in the cafe which has a wonderful view over the reserve.
The walk is wheelchair friendly and there are wheelchairs for free hire too.

What a gem. We visited on Wednesday 13th. Staff very helpful and friendly. Special mention to the young man who did the otter and flamingo talks, very interesting and informative.
The hides were clean and even had cushions on the seats!. I forgot my bird book however the hides had copies in situ. which was a bonus.
Don't bother with a picnic (though there are lots of picnic tables available) the food in the cafe is excellent, we had the biggest fruit scones ever (baked on site). Coffee very good quality and most importantly, hot!
Great play area for kids too, so we'll bring the grandchildren next time.

Everywhere is well signed and the birds appear content. The visit was rounded off by a visit to the cafe/restaurant where the scones are absolutely fantastic.

Super, sunny day trip to this lovely family attraction. Very good safety procedures in places starting with pre, booking to ensure low numbers. Plenty of birds to see and all cages/ hides etc.well labelled and informative. Toilet blocks throughout site and lots of sanitizers available. Lots of seating areas throughout and a lovely, organised cafe- very clean. Weather was fab so that certainly made visit most enjoyable. Ample free parking . Thoroughly recommend and will be returning soon.

Could I push a buggy around the longest outer loop of the path? The map says restricted wheelchair access but unclear in what way. Thanks

I have pushed my son round in a buggy many times some parts a little bumpy but you can definitely get around no problem x

Hi Brian, WWT Washington here!
Unfortunately only assistance dogs are permitted on site due to our zoo licence and the other birds on site. There are some shaded areas in the car park but this changes throughout the day - we would not recommend leaving your dog in the car given the current temperatures.
We hope to see you soon.

Hi, Juliet, apologies for the delay! You can use the cafe yes, it's only if you want to go into the grounds that you need to pay admission. Thank you
