Interesting house and history

Enjoyed the house, abbey, ground and motor museum all available on one ticket and on one site. The monorail seemed rather dull though. Catering was not as good as expected.

It is many years since I visited Beaulieu so when an American petrol head and history enthusiast friend was looking for an interesting place to visit I could not think of a better suggestion than Beaulieu. It was even better than I remember with many more attractions than it seems possible to take in in one visit so we are planning a further visit in the New Year

Family Home
Sep 2020 • Couples
As you walk into the house, it feels like a family home with the panelled entrance hall displaying artefacts from the 3 generations who lived at Palace House. I particularly enjoyed the display of colourful panels, cushions, needlework celebrating the rich and varied designs of the current Lord Montague’s mother, Belinda Lady Montague. I also very much enjoyed the personal comments attached to the displays bringing the house to life. The one way system for Covid works well and there is plenty of space.

A nice place to look around giving a good contrast to the motor museum.
Sep 2020
We visited the Beaulieu Palace House during a visit to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu.
We drove to the museum it is easy to find and our route took us through the picturesque village of Beaulieu itself. There is a large (free) car park on arrival and this is located not far from the entrance to the museum itself.
Following a visit to the car museum, we had lunch and then walked down to the Palace house, via the gardens with their fountains and well maintained topiary sculptures and then the house is reached. The house was originally the gatehouse for Beaulieu abbey but became a private residence when the abbey was dissolved. The frontage is quite impressive and its circular tower gives it a slight ‘French chateau’ feeling. The frontage looks out over expansive lawns and the large lake.
Hand sanitiser was provided at the front door and we were met by a member of staff who was available to give a quick introduction and answer any questions we might have. The house had a one way system in place leading visitors from room to room including a grand staircase lined with oil paintings of scenes and portraits. The interior has some well-furnished rooms with much to see and experience including a well equipped kitchen area and fans of the television series ‘Downton Abbey’ will no doubt enjoy passing through each room. The downstairs dining room has a fine stone vaulted ceiling, presumably dating from the time when the building was part of the abbey.
Associated with the house are the grassed areas and lake which if the weather is fine a nice place to walk and admire the view. We also took the river walk along the bank admiring the interesting wooden sculptures along the way and this took us back to the main buildings.
All in all a nice place to look around giving a good contrast to the motor museum and will be popular with those with an interest in history or who like looking around other people’s homes.
