Fascinating history, great day out
Jun 2021 • Couples
I visited here with my wife whilst in the area on holiday.
We didn’t know what to expect, but thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
We started by doing the tour, and the guide (Robert) was superb. The tour was full of details and fascinating facts about the site. I’d recommend the tour as a great way to learn about the site.
The visitor centre was good and have a good introduction to the site and its history.
The café was good value, and we were pleased with the quality of food and drinks.
I’d really recommend visiting here if in the area as the history is fascinating.

Well worth it.

The battlefield audio guide is excellent. It may be a bit long for some people though. The Abbey itself is also amazing to look round, to see what medieval builders were able to do. Good refreshments available in the cafe.

GOOD DAY FOR A BATTLE!
Jul 2021
Always wanted to visit this place but its taken 65 yrs!! Very enjoyable half day spent there. Booked 1pm ticket and leisurely strolled around the grounds and abbey. I enjoyed the climb to the top of abbey which offered good views of the town and the wall which offered a good view of street below. So much history with good exhibition of various items on display. The Battlefield offers a shady walk part wooded with carvings and grazing sheep u feel like u are back in 1066! Very reasonable price.

I can recommend the Senlac Inn by station if you fancy a meal after visit. Not many pubs in area. Visitors could always pop to Hastings after as it only 15 mins by train and £5 return.

Fun and interesting way to spend half a day
Jun 2021
Had a lovely half day exploring the Abbey and battlefield. It was a very wet day but that added to the atmosphere! I joined the free guided talk on the Abbey history, the guide did a good job with the rain, although it was a pity that it coincided with the school break and arborists at work with their chainsaws! The audio guide was easy to use and told the story of the battle interestingly with enough information and options for more info for those who wanted to hear more. The abbey itself is stunning with several areas you can go inside and explore. Had a decent coffee in the cafe but there were only a few tables available which were full. I was there on my own and there was plenty to do, I also saw lots of things to entertain kids. You could spend and hour or several if you wanted to explore everything. Staff and volunteers were all very friendly and knowledgable - thanks for a great day out!

Well worth the money. Excellent way to spend half a day. Staff were excellent and well informed. The audio guide you get is really good when you go on the battle field walk. Only down side were the prices in the cafe, other than that highly recommended.

Battle, East Sussex Abbey, Battlefield and Museum
Jul 2021
On arrival at the Abbey we were welcomed by enthusiastic staff - despite the very heavy rain.
It was one of the days of the Scarecrow Competition (10th July 2021) in Battle itself and there were quite a few visitors to the town and the Abbey, The Scarecrows were excellent!

Due the really bad weather, and quite a large proportion of the tour being outdoors, we decided to adjourn our visit to another day.

However, we were most disappointed that the Battle Museum of Local History was CLOSED ALL DAY!!
How come this was allowed to be, with all the visitors in the town one of the key attractions was close?. Many of the town's shops were closed too - what is going on? Does Battle want visitors to come?
We left quickly and went to Hastings which was very much OPEN!!

A GREAT DAY OUT.
Jul 2021
Well worth a visit. Visited in a group of 4, 2 English Heritage members, and 2 not.
A mix of ages too. Everyone enjoyed the day, the buildings, the battlefield, the history and the good weather all helped. The Visitor Information Centre and Cafeteria were very accessible and not too busy. Everything was well laid out and all precautions had been taken re Covid. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Well worth a visit
Jul 2021
Although the story of 1066 and all that is well-known, going to the actual battlefield is something quite special. The information provided during the audio tour was useful and added to my memories of history classes at school many years ago.

The Abbey ruins themselves are obviously a mere shadow of their former glory but were interesting and gave some idea of the size and scale of the site before Henry VIII did his thing. Overall it was a good day out and well worth the visit. All the English Heritage staff were helpful and friendly although we didn’t use their guide services, as the audio guides were all we needed.
