About
If it's nature you like, don't miss a walk through Northern Australia's largest colony of wild koalas on Magnetic Island. The remarkable Forts Walk is the best vantage point for wildlife, spectacular rocky coves and historic military sites. With 360 degree sweeping views of the coast and Coral Sea, this is a walk guaranteed to impress. Home to the best preserved WWII fortification on the eastern seaboard, the Magnetic Island Forts Walk is a reminder of just how close Australia came to being invaded. The walk includes The Forts gun emplacements which are still intact and offers interpretive signage along the way, providing a great insight into the significance of the area. Enjoy this walk in the early morning or late afternoon for the best chance of spotting koalas. Be sure to take water and wear appropriate walking shoes as there are some steep climbs on this walk. Worth it for the views
Jun 2021
The forts had been closed for an upgrade and the car park area looks amazing. A sweaty moderate climb which did get steep at the end. Well worth the view at the top and interesting historical site. Great to see koalas in the wild. A must see on Maggie Island.

Road in closed greatly extending the walk in
Jun 2021
I was disappointed not to be able to do the full walk due to roadworks which made the way up to beginning of the walk a much longer uphill hike first
Hopefully finished soon and buses will be able to stop at the start of the walk

Koala Central!
Jun 2020
If you don't see a koala on this walk you'd be one in hundred! Lovely walk, nothing too difficult. New Forts Junction upgrade will make it a lot more comfortable for walkers as well.

Good walk
May 2021
Good views at the top.
This is the number 1 walk on the island. Walking was easy at the start but lots of steps near the top.
Unfortunately there was road works out the start of the walk so had to park a fair way away. The toilets were closed for renovations as well

While visiting Magnetic Island it's important to be mindful of the negative impact rising tourists numbers are having
Mar 2021 • Couples
If any on line reviews tell visitors to Magnetic Island that they can search for Koalas outside of the national park particular in residential areas and populated streets this is untrue and residents will approach and ask visitors to leave. There has been a significant reduction in Koala numbers because of human encroachment. Stick to the walking tracks and keep your distance from the native animals so as not to distress them.

Great Walk!
Apr 2021 • Couples
The walk is open on certain days (weekends included) - even though the entrance is being renovated to enable better parking options. What a great walk! Bush and boulder flora and koalas to boot! Interesting WW2 memorabilia. Walk up and back and then walk down to Horseshoe Bay is 8km.

Forts Walk
Sep 2020 • Couples
This is such a spectacular walk! It’s a 4 km return walk that starts on a incline sloped road following the ridge line with a few WW2 sites along the way then at the end of the road is a steep staircase circuit that covers the fully intact WW2 bunkers that can be climbed.

There are lots of signs to read along the way talking about all the history stuff as well for you to peruse if you enjoy that 😃

We ended up finding 3 koalas, 2 of which were low enough in the trees to even gently pat and get a selfie with 😍

No one told us until we got to the island that the walk is currently completely closed as they build a car park!!!! Nowhere else can you easily see koalas on the wild. Made the whole day trip a bust for us.

Great walk
Jan 2021
This was a great walk - although very hot! Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon. It took us just under two hours, and that's including the extra time to walk up the hill because of the construction - you can't park in the carpark at the moment. We didn't see a single koala!! But we saw them just on the main street near our accomodation so we weren't too bothered. Take your time and enjoy all the history!
