About
Nestled in the Sussex countryside with views across the High Weald, James and Margaret Beale chose an idyllic location to build their rural retreat. Designed by Philip Webb, Standen is one of the most complete examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship, with Morris & Co. interiors and a story of family life in 1925. Outside, Mrs Beales passion for gardening inspires a major restoration of her 12-acre hillside garden. Each garden room has a distinct character and offers something for every season from spring bulbs to autumn colour. Explore the wider estate with footpaths leading out into the woodlands. Close at 4pm November - January

Lovely walk.
Mar 2021 • Couples
To start the day we were greeted by 2 of the most delightful ladies you will ever likey to meet. Lots of information all with a smile. ( National Trust clone these 2 ladies for all the sites) We had a lovely walk around the gardens with plenty to see. We then headed for the Hollybush Wood walk. Amazing trail with a board walk around a big chunk of it. Cup of coffee to finish the visit and driving out ofvyhd car park we were waved goodbye with a smile So refreshing so wll fon Standen and well do e those 2 ladies.

The staff were top notch!

Took my toddler and baby here today, in an attempt to keep occupied during lockdown and get some exercise. What an utter delight!! It's so beautiful and so much to do and see. Was tricky with the pram due to so many steps but everyone just left their prams at the bottom of the first set of steps and carried babies in carriers - I did the same, and no problem. The staff were phenomenal - so incredibly friendly and helpful! I went to nearby Wakehurst the previous day, and the staff there were so rude... This made a welcome contrast so thanks very much!

Beautiful decorations and despite necessary COVID restrictions worth a visit.
Dec 2020
Despite the current restrictions a visit to the house and gardens was delightful even with wind and rain. The gardens have Winter colour and on our visit the children’s garden trail was set up. The house has a queuing system to support social distancing. In addition there are hand sanitising places and staff are discreet in their reminders to wear a face mask and stay apart. The ground floor is open and beautifully decorated. A magnificent hanging ‘hoop’ tree made of dried flowers and lights fills the stair well. Each room has a tree, information on Christmas with the Beale family and a mix of music , lights and projections. Although a smaller than normal display and route it is very much worth while going to visit. Pre book on website for entry to property and then queue as necessary to enter house. We waited less than 10 minutes. Both the shop and cafe are open. The weather was wet but this didn’t matter. It was a great start to our festive season. Well done to the team.

A warm, welcoming experience
Dec 2020
First visit to Standen House. A chance to meet my elderly brother and wife (at a distance due to CoronaVirus) . We had had a miserable visit to Polesden Lacey on the 8th December (a couple of days earlier) where house, cafe and gift shop were freezing cold with all doors open and no heating and no explanation (one of the coldest days of the year). Standen, by contrast, was warm and welcoming. The cafe is in a very attractive barn. Only the ground floor of the house was open during the Virus, but very interesting. Only this blessed weather "rained on our parade" so we could not see the gardens. Recommended.

Very busy on weekends.
Nov 2020
Great place to spend a few hours. We went on a Saturday during the “lockdown” just to get out of the house. The weather was fantastic and the sun was shining. I thought it would be busy but it was packed full of people. There doesn’t seem to be any one way signs / walks set up unlike other national trust places. They also didn’t have any maps and was told to a photo of the map at the entrance. I don’t think it’s COVID secure because the pathways are very thin and there was no signs to say which way to go. I’d probably enjoy it more if there wasn’t a pandemic on. Still it is a lovely place to walk round (just avoid weekends).

quiet

This is an interesting house and gardens, they are like a lot of NT places with current restrictions, and the garden are not what they could be, still lovely, and the walk in the woods from the car park is great. The house is partly open, and its worth going through the shop to get to the domestic electricity information

The House won’t take you long at the moment, but the gardens and walks will.
Sep 2020
Unfortunately due to covid restrictions the upper floors and some of the interesting rooms on the ground floor are not accessible at present but full marks to the volunteers for opening what they can of the house. So if the house is your main area of interest probably worth leaving it for a while. But the Upper and Lower Gardens and the long walks through the house woods and grounds are worth a visit on their own on a fine day.

So impressed by volunteers
Sep 2020 • Family
We had a great time at Standen today - every single person on the site was so friendly and welcoming. We were greeted by a very friendly and polite young man at the entrance, and all volunteers at the house were so lovely and approachable. It’s pity that only the ground floor of the house is currently open for public but we totally understand during the current pandemic. We will def go back there again - thank you for your hard work under the current situation!

Disappointing
Sep 2020
This is a 5 storey house and you only get to see the ground floor. You could do the ground floor in 30 minutes. We travelled for 1 3/4 hours and honestly this house although beautiful is disappointing. The electric light exhibition was an absolute joke.
