About
Gummer's How is easy to reach via the A590, turning onto the A592 at Newby Bridge, and then right onto Fell Foot Brow. Continue to drive or cycle up the incredibly steep hill until you reach the car park at Gummer's How. There are also several laybys where you can sensibly leave your car. You can probably do without a map for the basic walk, but if you have an OS map, the grid ref for the start is SD 390 877, height 681ft. If you go off the main path onto the myriad of smaller paths, we would definitely recommend a map. Start by taking the footpath northwards, signposted Gummer's How. Almost immediately you will be rewarded with magnificent views of the lake. The path is a little bit challenging, but straightforward if you're reasonably fit and wearing sensible walking shoes. Grid ref for the summit is SD 390 884, height 1034ft. At the top there is a trig point, and some fabulous views of Windermere. Total length of the walk, there and back, is about 1.2 miles.

- Jaddva HLondon, United Kingdom81 contributionsAmazing views of Winderemere and the surrounding areas.I and my better half always take in the walk to Gummers How. This is the 4th time over the years. A lovely walk taking in the surrounds including a complete view of Windermere Lake. (The leisurely walk up and down took us a couple of hours). For a change we had marvelous weather with temperature scale touching 27 degrees. Highly recommended, would definitely take this walk again in the future.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 September 2023
- JoChipping, United Kingdom10 contributionsGummer's HowExcellent walk up Gummer's How on Sunday. We did loose a Chipping FC hat though if anyone finds it! It started to snow as we made our way up making the views even more amazing. You could see for miles it was lovely, the children enjoyed the rock climbing and it was far enough for little legs. Not even underfoot so be careful but we all absolutely loved it and can't wait to return.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 January 2024
- Paul KManchester, United Kingdom44 contributionsThe best views of the Lake District and surrounding areas from a wonderful walk.A reasonably easy walk we did in the snow and loved the incredible panoramic views. There is parking on the road or at a nearby forestry car park. The weather was reasonably clear and we were quickly rewarded with stunning views of the coast to south, Lake District snow capped mountains to the west north and east. 360 degrees of amazing views! Walking through the woods we even stumbled across a herd of deer. If it’s icy I’d recommend traction equipment for your boots. There are also many trees that have fallen over the path, so the Komoot app proved valuable to us. It’s now one of our favourites and I have no doubt we will do it again in the future.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 January 2024

The walk is hard work especially with my bad knees

Great view of Lake Windermere from the top, but be aware that the slate path near the top involves some rock climbing manoeuvres.
We saw the famous cows and calves and the lady behind us was put off from going further. It is clear however that the cattle are used to walkers.

The views from the top were breathtaking. It was a beautiful day and the walk was really easy. When we got to top we had some lunch and took in the stunning views. I’d certainly recommend this walk.

Really lovely place, even on a drizzly day! Only a short walk from the car park. The walk is on an uneven slate path so ensure you wear good shoes!

This is good short walk for an afternoon or morning. A good free car park close to the beginning of the walk. If you do not want to bump into naked ramblers avoid mid August who stay for the weekend at Fell Foot nearby.. We were certainly surprised.
