I have driven over Hardknott numerous times and never once in a four wheel drive vehicle. It is a tarmac road and usually shut in winter when a 4x4 would be useful if it had winter tires. What you do need are good brakes and...More

HardKnott and Wrynose passes are a drive that cannot be effectively portrayed in pictures and cannot be adequately described in words. They just cannot substitute for the real thing. It is a hard/challenging drive, for the driver, any passengers and the vehicle. It is NOT...More

A very steep , narrow and sinuous road allowing access from Langdale to Eskdale. Usually it is the other drivers that cause trouble, especially 1st timers.

The views are breathtaking over the pass. However the road is very steep and bendy in places. We encountered many potholes which made the journey quite hazardous as these have to be avoided whilst an eye on the twists and bends in the road. We...More

This drive was a real challenge particularly when you are behind someone doing 2 miles an hour. The road is very tricky and there was not much room to pass vehicles which had pulled over to take photos or oncoming vehicles. My wife was frightened...More

This was a dual purpose visit, firstly to visit the remains of the Roman Fort, I wanted to fly my drone and get some good aerial shots. It’s amazing that hundreds of years ago a fort was built in such a remote location, your mind...More

Travelled from Eskdale over Hardknott down into Wrynose Bottom. A narrow road with very steep blind summits. Front wheel drive car got a bit spinny at times. Wrynose section especially narrow with a few passing places and oncoming idiots. The views are staggering bu5 not...More

There are sections of this road that are really difficult - 30% gradient, narrow and hairpin bends. You need a bit of experience to get over this. Wrynose Pass isn’t easy and then you can take a break in the stunning valley before Hardknott Pass....More

We only drove part of the way up this road to see the Roman fort. We have a 4 x4 and thought the road would be a breeze. It would have been if it wasnt for the other idiot drivers not thinking ahead and driving...More

It's a hard drive, I just about made it in my fiesta at the time, but if you've got a 4WD you should be ok. Once at the Fort on a clear day it's beautiful. Walking around the old bath house and fort is a...More

Hi Sarah, in my opinion both options are a nightmare. Cars are always coming in both directions and passing can be a challenge. Probably best if you can get there earlier as I would expect less traffic would be around then... More
