This isolated island is quite a sight to see from Advocate Harbour. It's near the entrance to the Minas Basin near Cape Chignecto and is almost two miles long. It has an interesting history: the Mi'kmaq used the island to make stone tools before Europeans arrived, and in 1604 Samuel de Champlain called it Isle Haut, which means High Island in French. The 300-ft high basalt cliffs are the result of volcanic eruptions in the Jurassic Period. There are tales of buried treasure and ghosts. Advocate Harbour offers boat tours of the island.
