    More Interesting than Outside Shows
Take the tour if you can. You get to see rooms that are closed off (like the monkey room) and hear more about the woodwork and other materials. Tour is free and starts on the hour, lasts maybe 45 minutes and will leave you on the observation floor where you can spend more time on your own after some facts are pointed out. You can also take a self-guided tour and see a lot on the ground and second floors. We did this first while we were waiting for the tour to begin.

    Great tour
We had a personal one to one tour as there were no other visitors on the day we visited. Our guide was very informative and so friendly. We learnt a lot about this state Capitol Building. On the day we visited various renovations had literally started that day within the building, which meant some areas were restricted as to access. It was definitely worth the visit more so as this State Capitol Building is not built in the normal rotunda style!

    Nice Art Deco Architecture
No tours were offered on the day we visited. However, we could wonder the building on our own with the aid of brochures. If a person visiting is into art deco architecture, then this place fills the bill. Also, there are very nice views from the observation deck on the top of the building's tower. Parking is convenient as well. Caution: during our visit the Senate & House of Representatives were unavailable for viewing during our July 2023 visit, because they were being restored.

    Beautiful building, lots of history.
Beautiful building. We went for a tour and the tour leader mentioned a Day Care was already scheduled to arrive at the same time we requested. She stated we were welcome to join the group but wanted us to know ahead of time. She was able to maintain control of the youngsters and was very informative.

The capitol grounds are a great place to walk around and check out. They have a few statues and beautiful greens and a few exhibits.

Rhonda, our tour guide was fantastic giving us the inside story on how the building was crafted. The exterior of the building is a bit plain because it was designed to be functional, but the inside furnishings are stunning.

This is one of the least attractive state capitol buildings we have seen in the United States. As a skyscraper it dominates the Bismarck skyline, but it lacks charm or authority. Boring!

I cannot recall a more glamorous state capitol building than this surprising high rise in Bismarck. Although the exterior may appear rather plain, the interior is full of gorgeous stone, woodwork, and metal. One has to wonder at how a conservative state in the midst of the Great Depression chose to build this strikingly modern Art Deco beauty. It must have been a controversial choice at the time as it so breaks with the tradition of state capitols modeled after the federal capitol in DC. The neighboring cultural center is full of insightful exhibits too. Good for North Dakota and good for travelers looking for a free stop that presents an unexpected window into the state’s fascinating history and people. Strong recommend.

We took a turn off the interstate to see the capitol building in Bismarck, ND. Wow, it has to be the ugliest state house in the USA! Just a big stone block. I understand it was built in the 1950's. We did not go inside since it was a Sunday. Maybe there more than meets the eye in there.

Beautiful State Capitol building with interesting self guided tour. View from the 18th floor is amazing. The grounds are clean and well-groomed. Many on site statues/displays.
