A good history lesson, with a number of exhibits that are interactive for the children and young at heart. Overall a good location to spend a couple of hours

Easily the best experience that I have had for my entire trip. It was absolutely magical and a steal at R100pp. An absolute must-do. Even people in the group who are not interested in this type of "stuff" had a great time. Do yourself a favour and go there. You would never be able to tell from the outside just have amazing it is.

Being there and the sense of history was my highlight. To grasp an understanding of the site and the history is what made the visit worthwhile.

This museum was not at all what we expected. It’s tailored more for schoolchildren and families with kids — except there’s a lot of reading — with many interactive exhibits (including a short boat ride and a spinning tunnel). The boat ride would have been great had there been some explanation about what we were seeing. As it was, the school group behind us loved it, screaming with joy. For adults, the information is interesting and thought-provoking, and it serves as a good introduction before going to Sterkfontein Caves. If you’re short on time, skip the museum and go straight to the caves.

We visited the Cradle of Mankind and Maropeng upon arrival in Johannesburg from the US. The attraction itself was kind of average. We expected a lot more. The exhibition room before going into the cave was pretty good. Lots of good information and the cave tour itself was pretty good. However, since we have seen other caves with much more impressive rock formations in other travels, this cave was not that impressive. There is no doubt about the archaeological importance of the cave though and so for that reason we were glad to have seen it. Our guide who picked us up at the airport was very good though. See our separate review of Stephenson Adventures.

We came here as part of a day trip from Pretoria and are so happy we did. The drive is ~1 hour each way and totally worth it. In addition to the history you can learn about here, the countryside views are spectacular.

Maropeng was a great experience! The guide was very good. But some of the exhibitions weren't working. But the vortex tunnel was great and the boat ride.

Took us about an hour to get here (we were late) they accommodated us by allowing us to take a later tour that was nice. Everything was good my only problem was there was a small boat ride supposedly to view the elements but there was no commentary on it so we just got on and didn’t know what we were looking at otherwise it was good and very interesting

The Cradle of Humankind comprises fifteen individual visitor sites, over an area roughly equivalent in size to an English county or a French commune.

You cannot see them all in one day.
I've attached a photo of the info board that shows the distribution.

The two 'big' sites are Maropeng Visitor Centre and Sterkfontein Caves.
These can easily be seen on the same day, and welcome tourists.

Visits to the some of the secondary sites have to be booked, otherwise you will find the gates locked.
Most (all?) of the current excavation sites are closed to the public.

But it's still well worth going, to Maropeng and Sterkfontein, to imagine what life was like for the first humans.
You don't need a guided tour to get there, the roads are good.
Maropeng, you can just walk round, but Sterkfontein you have to join a ranger tour.
You can buy tickets online, but we just turned up, bought a 'combo' ticket to both sites, and joined a tour half an hour later.

Find websites for 'The Cradle of Humankind' on the Gauteng Tourism Authority or 'Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves Official Visitor Centre'.
