You get to appreciate all that goes into designing and making of an air craft. Also the intelligentsia behind air control. All in all mine was a very informative and pleasant tour. Thank you to the staff at SAA museum.

Excellent experience, highly recommend this. I have done a lot of these tour or museum visits and this was one of the best and Micheal Blackburn is definitely the best tour guide i have come across. He worked in the plane that you will visit. It the plane that flew over Ellis Park and had transported Madiba... really loved this experience and so inspired to see a person so passionate about his work, i.e. Michael Blackburn.... the museum is 10/10... Mr Blackburn was 100/10... thank you Michael for your wonderful service in this tour

The SAA Museum has a fleet of historic civil aircraft - both as static displays and operational aircraft. Notably the museum has on static display a Boeing 747SP - the "special performance" shortened 747 developed for ultra-long distance flights. This was required by South African Airways to fly around the bulge of Africa to reach Europe during sanctions against Apartheid. There are also static displays of a 1940 Lockheed Lodestar and a 1946 Vickers Viking amongst other civilian aircraft. The historic flight of operational aircraft includes a DC-3 and two DC-4s. There is also a display hall with civilian aviation memorabilia. A must for civilian aviation buffs. See www.saamuseum.co.za for the list of aircraft on display.
The museum is at Rand Airport, which is a busy airport and some aircraft are noisy - which is not necessarily ideal for smaller children.

If your looking for a really interesting activity to do with your family the SAA Musium is a must. Really nice to be able to tour the 747! The guided tour by Micheal was brilliant, having flown with SAA for over 40 years the knowledge he has is amazing, enjoy your retirement Michael.

This is a really interesting outing for anyone that enjoys planes.Children seem to love as you can also get on to some of the planes. There is a small pub / Restuarant nearby or you can finish off by going to Rand airport and watching the planes and helicopters there as well. It is a visit well worth doing.

We visited the SAA Museum on a sunny Saturday afternoon and we came away with some lovely photos and lovelier memories. The place although small is very well maintained, neat and clean. The entry fees are very affordable (R25 for my son, R40 per adult) and the staff is very helpful. We had a guide take us through the 747. The planes are very well maintained considering the museum largely depends on ticket sales for their funds. My son thoroughly enjoyed exploring the planes. Near the ticket kiosk, there is a small exhibition of model airplanes of yore, equipment and uniforms that were in use in the past.
The museum is open from 9 am - 3pm. We spent close to 2 hours there but thats because we had an aviation enthusiast with us who just didn't want to come away. You could spend even as little as 30 minutes here but it all depends on how long you want to explore.
To sum it up, its a great place to take the kids and a lovely way to spend an afternoon !

Took my small kids on a Sunday. They loved it. Where else do they get to run up and down the aisle of a 747?

Whether you are an aviation fanatic or its something new, it will be time well spent visiting this museum. It allows you to get up close and personal with the aircraft in ways that would otherwise not be possible at all. The people that are involved with the museum are very passionate and have a wealth of knowledge of all things aviation.
