Tribal textiles(TT) was strongly recommeded by friends .The facebook page too looked very attractive.A visit is must.
It is on the way to the game park gate so you will pass the village and various art and craft shops.Plan a stopover here and check out the goodies.
The place is marvellously stocked with cushion covers, table covers, napkins, coin purses ,bed sheets ,glass art, metal wprk etc in ,very unusual unique colour. One is tempted to go overboard and buy as much as possible but the high price is big deterrent to the intended shopping therapy.I wish they have local rates or local discount and encourage domestic tourist to buy.Anyway,I did manage to buy few items but wish I could have bought more.
There is a workshop behind the shop where you can learn the art and customise your own cushion or bedsheet. But do remember to visit on the first day of your stay in SLNP as it will take almost 24 hours to get back the final product. The craftsman very generously informed us of the whole technique but I wish we could make our own.Next time!
Covid has been hard for everyone and TT is no exception. They do need local support as the foreign tourist are very few .They have a outlet at the airport and one can order online too.

Lovingly, tastefully decorated shop with wonderfully hand painted textiles in various styles and colours. Pillow cases, napkins, table clothes, etc. Warm welcome by staff. You can witness production process right there in small backyard. Enjoy good cookies and coffee on the terrace to round up an very enjoyable shopping experience.

Best shopping in the area, right near Mfuwe. Worth the 10 minute tour and the nice shopping experience.

Make sure you take time to go to the main store on the way to the airport so you can see how the pillow covers, table lines, bed spreads etc are made. It’s truly interesting to see and hear about the process, takes hand made to a whole new level ... I was so impressed that i went back in and bought more! They have an online store, but it has only a fraction of what’s available in person but you can get a sense of it before you arrive in the county. Each piece is unique, even if it’s the same design.

I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent here-fabulous products and wonderful to see how everything is made. As I was travelling light, I limited myself to buying 3 sets of napkins and nearly made myself crazy trying to choose from so many wonderful designs. Unfortunately I did not undo the strings and packaging to check them before I left the store and when I got back home to North America and opened everything, one set had faded lines on all 6 napkins where they had been folded. Perhaps from being in the light for too long? I would certainly buy again, but I would check everything before leaving.

Impressive community development initiative, producing high quality textile products. Fascinating to see the local artists and production people in action. Wonderful philosophy on a blackboard in the sewing room says it all about how the organisation operates.
The products are original and very attractive.
Don’t miss this place, and do support the very worthwhile initiative, employing and training local people in a sustainable and creative way.

Well, even in the bush there is an opportunity to shop. The colors were great, prices reasonable and a nice variety. Check them out online too!

I visited Tribal textiles on the way back from South Luangwa and went in with $100 in my hand fully expecting to come out with little change. But while the quality was good and i really liked the designs, the prices seemed extremely high. I was particularly put off by the 2 metre 'chitenje' (wax print) material on sale for $20. It was the higher quality chitenje, exactly as can be found in the market and that costs at most $5. This kind of mark-up seemed crazy and coloured my view of the rest of their own textiles on sale, and unfortunately I came away with money in hand and no purchase.

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by at Tribal Textiles and leaving us a review. We're glad you enjoyed our products! We understand that our prices may be higher than expected for the textiles we sell. All of our prices are very carefully calculated and continually reviewed as the cost of doing business in a remote part of Africa fluctuates. The core of our business has always been our amazing artists and we are committed to paying all our staff fair and decent wages, giving them government approved employment contracts and assisting them with housing, transport, health and food production expenses. This does increase the cost of producing our textiles but we believe that supporting our workers is fundamental to our business. In addition, we source all of our raw materials within Africa which is more expensive than sourcing from Asia for example, however this is very important for our environmental policy Hopefully this gives you a better overview of our company and its costs. Feel free to take a look at our website for more information or shoot us an email if you have any questions!

We decided to visit tribal textiles on our way home from our trip to flat dogs. I found the actual shop hard to find. The quality of the items was reasonably good but I felt the prices(all in US dollars) were too high.

Dear Shesmoodie, Thank you very much for visiting Tribal Textiles and I hope you had a wonderful safari in the South Luangwa. I’m sorry to hear that you struggled to find us. When you visited we had three large painted pillars alongside the road advertising our location; these have now been replaced by two large sign-boards due to road widening. We are 500 metres from the Chipata/Mfuwe T junction and 8 km from Mfuwe Airport heading towards the National Park gate. I am also sorry that you weren’t able to find something within your price range. We offer a wide variety of products ranging from inexpensive purses and keyrings up to our limited edition beautiful Gallery wall hangings. Each of our unique textiles is carefully hand drawn and hand painted by our team of talented artists. All of our prices are very carefully calculated and continually reviewed as the cost of doing business in a remote part of Africa fluctuates. The core of our business has always been our amazing artists and we are committed to paying all our staff fair wages, giving them government approved employment contracts and assisting them with housing, transport, health and food production expenses. This does increase the cost of producing our textiles but we believe that supporting our workers is fundamental to our business. In addition, we source all of our raw materials within Africa which is more expensive than sourcing from Asia for example, however this is very important for our environmental policy. Finally, we are lucky enough to be situated in a very remote and beautiful part of Zambia which does mean that overheads are surprisingly high for all businesses situated in our area. We believe strongly that ethically run, socially responsible and profitable businesses are vital for Zambia’s future. Tribal Textiles has been running successfully and employing local people since 1991, and we are committed to continuing to offer the employment opportunities that we do. To do this we need to make sure that our business is sustainable, just like any company the world over. I hope that this helps to explain more about Tribal Textiles and why our stunning textiles are priced as they are. Please visit our website and Facebook page to find out more about our activities, community commitments and conservation efforts, or email us for more details. Many thanks again for visiting us and for your feedback; it is always valuable and helps us to improve.
