The walkway trail and the bridge are beautiful, great views, nice breeze, really good amenities (cleanest public bathroom I've ever seen) - but the trail that takes you through Poughkeepsie to the Mid Hudson bridge and back up the Haviland, well... I would say just stay up on the trail and bike or walk it back and forth (8 miles).

The path through the town has you cross some busy streets and walking the Mid Hudson Bridge - very noisy (although the Bridge Music was very cool).
While there is very good signage (just follow the yellow arrows), crossing the busy streets was not as relaxing and at the end basically walking uphill on the side of the road - not for kids.

What's not to love - gorgeous views, a nice distance for a walk and then lunch; bathrooms at either end; dogs allowed. I come here several times a year. The only thing I wish is that in the hot weather, they would put huge signs telling people that dogs are NOT allowed because the Walkway becomes so hot that the dogs will burn their paw pads. People who bring their dogs in the Summer/hot weather, should have to walk barefoot across the Walkway.

It was a really nice walk.(about3 miles to end and back) Extremely hot day but the breezes helped. Unfortunately, the elevator to water level was undergoing maintenance so not available. The views are stunning and would recommend this to all!

Our Inn keeper told us about this river walk. The day was beautiful and so was the 1 mile walk. bikers , walkers, dog walkers, and the view of the Hudson river breath taking.

So I live very close to the walkway and during the weekends it can get crowded. However, it is a beautiful view during the entire walk which is only about a mile each way. Be warned, there is no shade from one end to the other, though there is usually a breeze and benches to sit. The view is amazing from both directions with Hyde Park and the CIA to the north and the Mid-Hudson bridge directly south. If you have a dog, make sure you have, or grab, a "doggy doodie" bag since there are none on the walk and there's nothing worse than your dog embarrassing you by pooping on the walkway and you having to be the jerk that leaves it there. Take a walk, bring some water with you, and plan to take the elevator, stairs, or sidewalks to eat at one of the amazing restaurants on either the Highland or Poughkeepsie sides of the Hudson.

Beautiful views of the river but they should limit the dogs or be strict with the clean-up policies.

We moved to the region 4 months ago and already have made six trips to the Walkway. Different vistas each time with spectacular fall foliage or ice flows on the river. Tugs pushing barges, Coast Guard ships breaking the ice pack and some of the longest freight trains you'll ever see. New visitor center coming soon on Highland side.
