Our Guide Bothwell knows the park amazingly well and showed us around. We saw a pack of lions including 3 cubs as well as many Giraffes, Zebras, Antilopes, Elephants with tiny babies, birds, hyenas and lots more. We had an amazing time. Thank you so muchVisited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 November 2023

Hwange is not some mysterious out-of-the-way, hard to get to National Park. Rather, it is literally just over 2 hours away from Victoria Falls airport with a very easy drive through lots of beautiful countryside. Seriously......turn right out of the airport, straight line for 150km then take a right. 15 minutes after your turn you will be at the park. Yeah, it really is that easy. The main camp has a shop, rest room, restaurant and ticket office. Two adults+car $45 total. Yup, great day out. Roads in the park are all easily passible with a regular car. If you want to do side roads (loops), you must have a 4x4. Either way all good. A beautiful park with waterholes for game viewing, look out towers too. The park is quiet with stunning countryside. Golden savannah grass, forested woodland and rest camps. An opportunity to see something else on your Zimbabwe trip. A real gem if you can spare a day or two. If you want to max your trip, an overnight stay can add to the experience. I stayed at Gwango Heritage which is 5 minutes from the park. A great stay in a beautiful hotel.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 May 2024

Out of the Big 5, we managed to see Lions, Elephants and the Buffalo. We did not see the Leopard and the Rhino. We took the full day Game Drive arranged by Hwange Safari Lodge. We had two excellent guides Lazarus and Blessing. There were plenty of varieties of birds as well.. Big differences on the park tracker and drivers if you compare with Chobe park, in Hwange they just do what must and more before learned what to say and try to be funny, it seems that they are not at all interested in tracking animals just drive around on the main road through the park and walk a little on a side road if you see an animal that is basically elephants because there are lots in this park. So I recommend choosing Chobe 1000x instead of Hwange. In Chobe, the tracker and the drivers themselves are interested in the animals and really try to find all the animals so that the customer is satisfied. The difference in Hwange they do their job because they have to, but in Chobe they do their job because they like it.

Hard to get to and the roads are not in the best shape. You can visit the Painted Dog Conservation site and certainly a special place once you get there. Lots of endangered birds. Quite a bit of driving is involved. Glad we went.

We visited as part of a Rovos train visit. The park was not nearly as interesting as Thornybush, but the ranger was very good and knowledgeable. It was a fairly short visit so It could be that if you were there longer, or early in the morning, it would have been better.

We did a safari in February 2020 (I'm late with my review) through this beautiful national park. It is the largest national park in Zimbabwe and lies at the edge of the Kalahari desert at the border to Botswana.
We saw very many different kinds of animals here. The abundant wildlife is stunning. We didn't see all of the big five, but what we saw was truly worth coming here.
Don't forget your camera and bring binoculars, if possible. Take your time and stop whenever you can to get that special picture!!! The animals come up close if you are very quiet and have a bit of luck. Had a lioness walk right past our jeep and right after that we had a couple that we caught in the middle of their afternoon (4:46 pm) love act. It was in the high grass, so the picture only show a slight hint of what is going on.
If you do not come here, you will truly have missed something!!!

Considering how close this is to Victoria Falls, I thought there would be a lot more people in Hwange. I am guessing the roads between the two put a lot of people off. But if you do brave the dodgy roads, you get to see so much! We were so lucky to see a pride of lions resting under a tree (including some cubs). We also saw heaps of elephants, giraffes, impalas, water buks, zebras and many birds. Even just outside of the park on a night drive I saw many bush babies which I hadn't managed to see anywhere else!

We spent 8 days in various parts of Hwange at 2 safari camps and what an amazing experience.
The wildlife and lack of crowds were mind blowing. From massive herds of elephants, cheetah, lions, sable, kudu and so many incredible bird species we were blown away.
...and the people of Zimbabwe - the friendliest, most helpful people in the world I have ever encountered (and I've traveled all over)
Looking forward to returning soon!

Definitely worth visiting. You can drive yourself or be part of an organised safari group. The latter is useful since the guides know where the various animals usually gather and they communicate by radio when something special is seen. Tak a picnic if you’re going for the whole day.

Hey all. I was wondering if driving from Victoria falls to Kapula camp. Do you need a 4x4 or can any car make the trip? This will be in 3-4 weeks time. Thanks.
Written 2 September 2019
overall you don`t need a 4WD in Hwange in general in dry season and even during rain season you get to the camp even with smallest car available.

We saw plenty of wildlife here including lion, Elephants, wild dog, hippo, crocodile, giraffe and leopard tortoises, it was a very memorable experience. We stayed at Bomani and Nehimba and travelled on the Elephant express. My daughter has her own travel company and has been to many camps, if you are interested her website and s on my profile you can contact her through there, she will be able to give you more information that I can. She specialises in tailormade Africa trips. Hope that helps. But we loved Hwange and I would return tomorrow if I could, it felt very exclusive. Hope you get to experience it.

yes and it is far easier than anywhere else; after the service is completed don't be shy to offer a gratitude for the great customer service. (I use this border each time when entering Zimbabwe)

Hello, I would like to enter Hwange National park from MAKONA gate post. I am coming in June. Does anybody has experience with this gate?

We are thinking of visiting Hwange late December this year but are worried about what wildlife we will see on account of it being the rainy season. Any advice would be good and also feedback on any reasonably priced camps to stay in.
Thanks

We visited in mid January and saw everything we expected, including lions (the very reclusive leopards are hit and miss in any season). Lots of giraffes, zebra, wildebeast, elephant, jackal, hippo, crocodile, and even a cheetah. We had little to no rain during the day.The guides have a little more freedom to roam, compared to parks where they are restricted to roads (and so your viewing is based on what can be seen from the road). If the weather cooperates, you will have some great viewings but it is admittedly tougher than the (more expensive) dry season when you can simply park beside one of the remaining waterholes and let the game come to you, as we did in Kenya/Tanzania. Hwange is home to Camelthorn Lodge, one of the best we have experienced. We have found it a little difficult to locate “reasonably priced” as lodgings seem to be deluxe or minimal, with not a lot in between. When travelling to African game country, we try to get the best price just on the edge of shoulder season.

Hi. Where in Hwange would you recommend I stay with my husband and two teenage sons? All they want in the world is to see and be around wildlife! Don't need luxurious accommodations.

We stayed at Khulu Bush Camp, (unfortunately ONLY for two nights) and loved it very much! We were a family group of 9 including kids aged 8 to 16
Khulu staff was excellent, the place was wonderful. Really recommended!

P.S. Frogs is in Hwange location. Plus we ate booked outside the park to be more economical on Accomadions, for the purpose to spend on multiple experiences.

We are from the USA, travel plans to Victoria Falls (After our Safari in Kruger 4 nights, and wanted plans to go to Chobe National Park, specifically because of the Chobe River Safari, plus other safari (s). Because the company I contacted recommends Hwange over Chobe, we are spending 3 nights in Hwange and only one night in Chobe for the River Safari. The company is out of Victoria Fall Falls that is booking all our plans in VF and Hwange, Chobe. I can not fine ANY reviews on the Frog Safari Tours except one, which was NOT good. Please share help, I need personal and professional recommendation (s) as there is alot at stake. This is my husband's birthday as well

Sorry. I’m not familiar with the Frog company but Vic falls was amazing and our safari in Hwange was great. Be sure to get Skin So Soft by Avon for bug repellant. We used spray bath oil and it saved our skin!
Hope you have a great trip!

Hi please advise if Sinamtella camp is still open to the public for camping in August this year?
Alos, is their fuel available at the camp?
Is their fresh drinking water?
Are their power points?
Is the campsite fenced?
Please also send through phone number for Hwange National Park. Number on website no longer exists. Thanks!

I went last November and did not camp which was closed due to flooding. We stayed at the Lodge. The lodge is older, but I loved it's authenticity.
