great for picnics, wonderful view, welcoming staff,
Aug 2021
Very nice grounds and excellent site for a picnic (we did) on their patio. Favorite wines to try are 'Viva' white and 'Lost Irishman' pink. Forgot to take testing notes, but very enjoyable these two. Two friendly (one is ancient), but not imposing, dogs to pet.

Stopped in for a wine tasting but ended up tasting more hard cider than wine. For $16 you get your choice of four 4oz samples which is good for 2 people. There were 5 white wines, 5 ciders, but only 1 red wine. Being red wine drinkers we chose 3 ciders and the red. We ended up purchasing a bottle of the cider which was delicious. We sat on the back patio and had a cup of mulled cider and enjoyed the view over Lake Seneca. We would recommend.

Overcharged and snotty
Jul 2020 • Couples
We visited here late in the afternoon and things went well at first. For tasting they hat a flight of four 2oz carafes for 10 dollars and a flight of four 4oz carafes for 16 dollars. We ordered a flight of four 4 oz carafes and took them outside to a table. We noticed that some people around us had carafes that week fuller than ours but we had never been there before so we didn’t think much of it. We finished those four and went back for four more 4oz carafes and this time the guy filled them much fuller. I didn’t understand what was going on so I checked out and I think the guy was irritated that I didn’t buy any wine and he made a snotty comment to me and charged me for 2 flights of four, 4oz carafes, 32 dollars total. I think the first flight were only 2oz. Anyway we liked some of the wines especially in the second flight but after we were overcharged we’ll never go back again.

Best in 3 days

After three days and visiting 20+ wineries in southern Seneca Lake, this winery was the best one my friends and I visited. The cab franc is the best I’ve ever had (and I drink a lot of red wine). We had a great, personable experience and kept saying wow, nothing compares to Catharine Valley when visiting the other places. You must go here.

My friends and I recently visited. The owner's husband was funny, attentive, and cute. Of all the wineries we visited this day, Catharine Valley's wine was oiur fav

Poor service AND wine leaves a bad taste
Jul 2019 • Friends
Dropped by Catharine Valley as part of a six-winery tour late last week and was underwhelmed by the service and quality. Two couples were practically ignored, when we asked questions about the history or story of the winery the reply was "we've been here a long time" and then she walked away. Hmmm, we started our tasting but after only three pours - each done quickly and then walking away as if we were imposing - and there were only 2 other people in the tasting room. A second person stepped behind the bar and didn't acknowledge us in any way. At that point, we stopped the tasting flight, paid and left. There are way too many wineries in the area to waste time where we are not appreciated with good service.

Tour Group Takeover

Every year I travel to visit my friend in Ithaca and she takes me to different wineries every time. This September we stopped here at Catharine Valley Winery. The view of the lake was absolutely amazing. However, when we pulled in it looked like there was some kind of party going on. There were college kids everywhere chugging down bottles of wine. We didn’t know if we should go in because we thought it might be a private party, but we ventured in and the staff told us they get tour busses frequently.

I did a tasting but felt very rushed because another tour bus came in and they pulled the staff to wait on them. Literally they came in and picked out a bottle of wine, the staff uncorked it for them and they just started drinking...no glass. Many of the guys were peeing on the property because they only had one bathroom. We hightailed it out of there only to be stuck in the parking lot because yet another tour bus came in and blocked us.

I found the winery itself to be beautiful and the staff (when I had their attention before they were taken away) were very nice. However, you can tell they cater to the big groups because I know they must have made a fortune with all the wine bottles they uncorked. If you go here I hope it is on a day when there is no wine tour busses. The place is very pretty and beautiful if you do happen to get to enjoy it without it being congested with college kids getting drunk.

I keep giving this pace a try but always walk away disappointed. This most recent visit was no different. The woman serving the wine was not helpful or friendly. In fact I felt like it was a bother to her that anyone at all walked through the door. Wines are fair at best.
They have wiled chickens roaming around and a few friendly dogs. Nice looking place with winter sport ( sleds of all kinds) on the walls.
Not recommended except for a photo stop.

Simply the Best!

Beautiful location and vistas of Seneca Lake. Passionate owner and winemaker stepped us through our samplings. He learned our tastes, integrating them into our tasting. It was early afternoon, and somewhat quiet. Wines of Alsace are featured. Be sure to sample the dry riesling, but their chardonnay, yes, don't worry, try it, you will be surprised. Get the back story on each tasting. I loved this place and wine, and I am a Bordeaux fan. Burgundy and Alsace are a little hard for me to sample at times, but like most things, you find someone to share their passion, and the final product is innovative and quite tasty.

Good wine and amazing views
Jul 2018 • Couples
The views from here are amazing! They have a deck over looking the lake and I could sit there and drink wine all day! The ciders are very good- the boxer was really good, but the pear wine was also excellent! And the staff was top notch! Couldn’t have asked for a better tasting experience! And afterward we just sat and enjoyed the late afternoon lake views!!! Definitely worth a visit.
