I don't wish to sound like a Debbie Downer, but this was simply a MAJOR disappointment. Please know the enticing photos you see advertising a close encounter with a shark are all taken from a deck on a boat, looking downward. DETAILS: Operated by Marine Dynamics (MD). After a boat ride to a predetermined area, all customers (out of 30ish on the boat) are dressed in wetsuits & face-masks. Then 8 folks at a time step down into the cage/water. As advertised from reviewers, the water is still unavoidably COLD. We are given 20 minutes in the cage. On cue from our boat, chum is tossed into the water and pulled toward us/boat like a fisherman. When sharks chase the chum, we are instructed to take a deep breath and dunk under water to see them. Unfortunately, the waters are very murky, nothing close to a swimming pool, or waters with sharks that I have seen on TV. And yet our boat guide somehow proclaimed that the water visibility was "very good". YIKES. You can only see the sharks as they are maybe 8ish feet away and swim by quickly. Over and over again. Frankly, after 8 minutes of watching the same "action", I was freezing and I had "seen" it all. Later, I was told that the Marine Dynamics location was a victim of 2 different water currents stirring up the bottom silt. So I was not unlucky that day, just doomed from the start. I was grateful that I was only 15 minutes away from MD's shark boat staying at the nearby Grootbos Nature Reserve vs. riding in a van to and from Cape Town for 2.5 hours, one way. For 20 minutes of "action" in a cage. Again, your best views are to stay on the boat and simply watch, no cage required. I gave 2 stars because the staff was very friendly and accommodating.

BTW: Marine Dynamics also operates a cruise to see the Marine Big 5 that was truly wonderful. I took that cruise the next day. As our boat drove to their sister's shark cage/boat, stopping for 5-10 minutes to see 1 of the Big 5 (sharks), I realized that this was the best way to truly see sharks in "action" - but a day too late.

Really loved the atmosphere on the boat and felt really safe. Haven't seen a white shark unfortunately but did saw lots of bronzewhale sharks (around 15) which are really incredible to see as well. Thank you for the unforgettable experience.

So this one is a real shame to write.

I'll start by saying that we were fully aware in advance that there was little shark activity in the area due to Orca's (February 2020) and that our chance of seeing a Great White was small (we knew this before the day and we were told by the staff in the morning) - so not seeing a great white shark wasn't a surprise and it doesn't influence my review.

We travelled from Cape Town to Gansbaai for our dive. Firstly - I would not recommend this to anyone (left at 4:30am and 2.5 hours each way) - I feel bad for people who took the shuttle and started as early as 3:30am.
I don't want to be too harsh but it's really just not worth it to travel this far. If cage diving is a must then I recommend doing it in your local area.

Regarding Breakfast - there wasn't enough for all the people who were going on the boat. Pretty annoying because there aren't any other options at that time of the morning and based on the cost paid there should have been an abundance.

Staff were actually the highlight of the day - especially Alina our Marine Biologist.
You could see the lengths to which she was going to ensure our comfort and she tried her best to make it entertaining for us.

The equipment was average at best. The water was very cold (approx. 12 degrees) and any holes in wetsuits let water in which was extremely uncomfortable in the cage. I was very surprised that there was no snorkel - I'll come back to this later but this would have made a huge difference to the experience.

The snacks were about what you would expect, chips and fried food (though that doesn't exactly last well over several hours).

The main reason for the poor review is that the experience just isn't worth it.

Over the approx. 4 hours we were there all we saw was a fur seal and a bronze whaler shark - and both of these were seen from the boat (not by people in the cage).

The water had extremely low visibility which is no more than 2-3 metres.
Maybe this was just our particular day but the problem is that with such low visibility combined with very little marine life the chances that we would have actually even seen anything at all were extremely small - even if we were looking directly at it.

Overall I just felt that there was never going to be a chance that I felt that I got my money's worth on this experience.
Even without seeing a Great White Shark, I can certainly appreciate a well hosted day out on a boat.

I want to repeat again that the staff were fantastic overall - I can only imagine the short-tempered customers that they would deal with on a daily basis (not our party - but certainly other people on our tour).
The circumstances that have led to a 2 star review are completely out of their control - but unfortunately I don't foresee these circumstances changing any time see.

My recommendation is to save your money and put it towards another activity - at least for the time being.

An amazing experience being in the cage with the sharks just outside. A well run trip and certainly one worth doing. Kelly the marine biologist onboard was excellent and very informative. Unfortunately we didn’t see any great white sharks but saw a lot of bronze whale sharks a couple of seals and a massive stingray which was totally unexpected. Would certainly recommend Marine Dynamics

We were at the shark cage diving in Gansbaai dying early Jan 2018. We have two small kids 9&6. Thankfully our elder kid was okayed by the captain to dive. We had chance to see some sharks and the water was very cold! Definitely a trip worth the site of sharks in their natural environment!!

We were picked up from V&A Waterfront and taken to Gainsbaii for the dive, the driver did a stop in Hermanus and we were fortunate enough to see whales breaching.A fine sight. On to Gainsbaii where we were greeted by the dive team,a bit of breakfast, some safety info and a short video then it was time to get wet suited and booted before we boarded the boat.
All staff/volunteers very knowledgeable and eager to help us land lubbers,a very good team indeed. Out into the bay on our shark adventure, sadly the Great Whites had’nt read the script.....The marine biologist explained that there had been Orca activity in the bay, sharks had been attacked resulting in no sightings on our trip.No problem, after all the GW’s are wild animals and not theme park attractions. The staff were very attentive in dealing with folk suffering Mal de mer.....We had a sail to a seal colony,Shark Alley and a penguin colony. All good.Back to terra firma, hot soup and bread was very welcome. We were offered a voucher to try again to swim with sharks. A great day out folks, give it a go.

Excellently prepared day out by the company, felt totally safe, you must do this! How cool is it to be able to be in the water with some of the World's most feared predators - at least they can't get through the cage....I think!

As a Shark Lover and an Open Water 1 Diver from Durban, South Africa, I've had 2 super awesome , life long memorable cage dive experiences in Gansbaai,Western Cape. Scuba diving in the warm waters of Durban (The Warmest Place be) is an absolutely fantastic experience. Aliwal shoal, Umkomaas, about 50km from Durban central & about 82km from King Shaka international airport is a divers paradise and rated as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world by Jacques Cousteau. Aliwal shoal is conveniently located, easily accessible via the N2 & caters for local and international divers and snorkelers. When visiting Durban, South Africa , all scuba divers should make Aliwal shoal a must visit. Durban,South Africa (The most livable city) is a great tourist destination and boasts excellent weather all year round with friendly diverse people and cultures.

Both my Shark cage dives with Marine Dynamics in Gansbaai, Western Cape is a life long special memory. I would definitely do it again when time permits and I'm in Cape Town. Cape Town with all its natural beauty, friendly people, and scenic drives and so much more makes it my favourite city to visit in South Africa, however I'm a very proud Durbanite and privileged to be born and live in Durban all life.Seeing the beautiful, majestic Great White Sharks in their natural environment is an experience that can't be adequately explained, it's an experience of a lifetime and has to be experienced by yourself to get the true essence.

Marine Dynamics is my preferred tour operator. They are a professional company with great resources, methodology and staff who goes the extra mile to make your experience more than just memorable and enjoyable one but will make you return for another tour. Great customer service coupled with the best location and having the main actors (Great White Sharks) is all the reason to enjoy a days outing at sea that won't be forgotten for the rest of your life.

My first experience was brought about when I told my new friends (a lady from Cape Town & a lady from Bahrain) whom we met on a boat to Dyer Island (Seal Island) in Cape Town about wanting to go Cage Diving to see the Great Whites in Gansbaai. After a brief discussion we agreed to book & go together. Unfortunately my wife had to prepare for an exam and couldn't join us. We opted to travel together in our private car rather than take the transport provided from the tour operators. The scenic drive was about 2.5 hours from Cape Town.

We met, travelled and arrived early on the day of the booking. We were welcomed, indulged in a great breakfast (a vegetarian breakfast was catered for me as I'm a vegetarian) and briefed about the White Sharks and what's to be expected.

Our group (Mostly international and a few South Africans) that we just met became friends quickly and all concerns fears etc were addressed. If you not a swimmer or diver, no worries as no experience is required.

The exciting time arrived, after filling in the indemnity forms it was off to the boat. The group had mixed emotions, some excited , some nervous and some even worried. We took our seats , put our life jackets on and we were on our way to sea enjoying the beautiful boat ride and fantastic sceneries of land and water. We kitted up with our 7.2mm wetsuits, Hoodies, and Aqua boots. When the boat stopped, chum was thrown in the water and shortly the first white Shark arrived. The first batch of people of 5 got into the cage ,put on the mask and snorkel and waited till they were told look out for the sharks. We were watching from the top and upper deck. Seeing the big great white at close range for the first time will never be forgotten. An amazing experience. we spent a few hours , most people enjoyed their moments in the cage that was submerged in the water, when the sharks came close we submerged our heads in the water and enjoyed a few seconds under water looking at this
graceful, lovely & beautiful Sharks.

This was one of the most memorable days of my life. I had to bring my wife back the ffg year and we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

We planning to go back next year and will use Marine Dynamics again. Can't wait for this.

At my entrance I was warmly welcomed and guided to the briefing and induction room where all of us were served a meal and I got to meet all of the trip members from abroad (Harriet & Harnish whoo ooh).
Toby the Tourguide explained to us all about the do's and dont's and also gave us the exact updated info about the weather conditions, different shark speciesn activities and visibility. Also showed us the importance of protecting these beautiful animals as alot of us have the wrong perception of Sharks only being these cruel Marine Monsters which is not the case. After my underwater experience with these beautiful creatures my whole image of them has changed.
I was given a bag with all the necessary gear in and the exact size. Best quality masks and didnt even feel the cold atlantic water with the quality wetsuit provided. The cage's design is perfect and secure with 3 different levels of iron bars which I could stand or attach my feet and hands to without having to touch the cage bars.. I almost jumped out of my wetsuit from excitement when I saw two of those beauts underwater literally half a meter from me!!! Wheeee!!! I dont have words to describe that feeling!
The crew on board treated me like royalty with a warm cup of hot chocolate and towel with some snacks on board.
All I can say is WOW WOW WOW!! It cant be easy to work with all the variables of the sea and wildlife, yet giving me the best possible experience!!
You are just simply the BEST!!! THANKS for all you're doing to conserv and protect the eco system therefor making it possible for all of us to enjoy. Im a fan forever. Xxx ANZA

The worst experience of my entire trip. We could not see any shark and when I asked for a refund, she denied, she said that is his policy, but she never said that before and I didnt sign anithing, so I could not knew that. She offered me a voucher but I have to left the next day so it was unusefull. The women of the company was rude and unpolite. If you are gonna do the shark experience, I recommend not to do it with this company.
