Thank you for you review and thoughts on your experience with us. We're glad that you found our crew and staff very capable, well organized and that you found your safety of utmost importance to us.
Bronze Whaler sharks are mid to bottom feeders and hardly seen at the surface of the ocean. They are about 3.5m big and pretty much the same size as some of the larger juvenile Great Whites we've seen. The fact that they have been seen by our guests on 99% of our trips over the last 6 months is an absolute miracle and our guests thoroughly enjoy their time with sometimes as many as 30 of these absolutely magnificent sharks around the cage. One only has to scroll up and down this review page and note the sequence of excellent reviews we receive from guests having seen both Great White as well as Bronze Whaler sharks or only Bronze Whaler sharks. These excellent reviews are very recent and independently posted by people who are understanding of the fact that running a successful and most importantly safe, shark cage diving operation comes with huge overheads, but that they can rest assured that a good portion of their money also goes towards research.
We truly sympathize with the fact that you did not meet a Great White shark during your trip with us, but as a reputable shark cage diving company we keep strict records of any wildlife sightings and as such, our guests are well informed of previous shark activity prior to joining us. Our guests still decide to join us for an absolutely awesome and unforgettable adventure at sea with the Bronze Whaler sharks and are then pleasantly surprised when a Great White shark also magically appears from the deep. One needs to go to sea with a hopeful attitude of seeing a Great White shark in its natural environment as an experience which is 100% nature related is also 100% unpredictable and although our crew try their utmost in order to attract the sharks to the boat, they remain wild animals which we'll always treat with the utmost respect. The ocean is unfortunately not an aquarium and this also applies to whale watching trips. Whale watching operators only go to sea during the whale season when whales give birth along our coastline and are off the sea during the time of the year when no whales are present. We're glad that you saw a Southern Right whale, contrary to the heading of your review.
Although Great White numbers are not what it used to be many years ago, shark cage diving boats have intermittently seen Great White sharks during trips over the last few months. They are wild animals which cannot be controlled, nor their movements predicted. Although we can be 100% sure of what we have seen in our bay every day, no guarantees or predictions can be made regarding future activity. Great Whites travel freely the entire breadth and width of the ocean and although we might have no or only a few sightings in our bay for a few days, we might then have as many as 8 to 10 the very next day or week we go to sea.
The shark cage diving industry in South Africa contributes immensely to the research and protection of Great White sharks. White Shark Diving Company is actively involved in this mission with our marine and research initiatives and we surely cannot be expected to change our advertising, branding or company name only because Great Whites are not seen on some trips. This would be an exercise in futility, especially since we are actively involved in getting Great White sharks the recognition and protection they so critically deserve. Although South Africa was one of the 1st countries to give these sharks the protection they deserve as a valuable part of the food chain, this protection does not unfortunately extend to other countries where they are still selfishly predated upon by the human race for shark meat and their food resources being destroyed by the shark fin industry.
We look forward to welcoming you on board again and we trust that you'll spread the message that Great White sharks are deserving of our respect, protection and further research in order to prevent them from going extinct.
Safety, education, respect and research (while having fun) remain our priority.
Best wishes and safe travels
