We had dinner, with my wife having rump steak and a chicken schnitzel for myself. Very tasty with a good cheese sauce. Prices were not bad.

Saturday night in Barrydale and even Jam Tarts is closed so our first venture to Bistro Blues despite the repeated recommendations of local folk
The outside appears freshly painted but remains uninspiring compared to venues on the main road. That all changes when you step into the bar. Big screen TV with the sport on, music on, locals tucking into their mouth watering steaks at the bar. But that’s the smoking section so our party of 9 turned back to the quieter, retro, non smoking section where 60s music was playing. The menu is limited and we went with the steak as recommended. Great choice! Generous portions, well prepared, tasty sauces
Will definitely return

If you want the best steak or the most succulent ribs then this is the place for you! No extensive menu to choose from but certainly the aforementioned are tops. Not the biggest or best wine selection but more than sufficient to accompany the menu. We have returned many times to the warm welcome of Winnie and Johan and will again sometime soon!

This must be about my 10th visit to this well established landmark, and they have exceeded my expectations every time. This is about the only place in Barrydale where you can enjoy supper, and you will wish it was in your hometown as well as you really just want to go back for more. Service is excellent, pricing is excellent, portions are generous, taste is excellent, a very pleasant experience, consistently. Do not think twice about supporting them, you will be satisfied.

On an overnight mid-winter stay at Barrydale, we dropped into the Bistro Blues with friends who were hosting us. We were warmly met and allocated a table with the menu, and drinks order, following efficiently - in that order! The menu is comprehensive with plenty of red meat on the menu. Our hosts highly recommended the steaks, however, I couldn't resist the eight chicken wings, my wife, the chicken schnitzel. My wings, with chilli, were exceptional - fat, perfectly cooked and juicy. My wife's schnitzel was very big and well prepared. We ate in silence as all four of us tripped out on a very pleasing meal! After the main course, puddings were beyond any of us. Prices were reasonable.

The only recommendation from the waiter was the steaks and ribs! And he was absolutely right. It was prepared succulently and as tender as it should be - providing that you do not order it well done. The pork spare ribs were also tasty and the portions are of a decent size - typical South African. Local dishes on the menu were limited: for example, a classic Karoo lamb chops or shanks, bobotie or a Cape style curry, would have been a great addition and interest to tourists from abroad. Maybe the local folk prefer their rump steaks - and they are they the regulars. Barrydale offers a decent variety of restaurants and coffee shops, but after 18:00 it becomes a challenge to find something open. The restaurant's pub is a lively place and where things can happen.

The food is absolutely amazing. Made by the owner himself. The speciality is the steak. with over 20 years of experience with grilling steaks, Johan sure knows how to make a mean steak! The service is just as good, whether you decide to sit and eat in the bar upstairs or in the restaurant. The owners are also extremely friendly.

Get the locals on a Saturday night if the vibe is right and you will have the jol of a lifetime.

They offer most amazing malva pudding, and ice cream meringue for desert. Be sure to try one, if not both of them!

Bistro Blues is a bar and steakhouse located in Barrydale. The bar is a reasonable size and offers a good selection of South African beers, shooters (shots) and other alcoholic beverages. Parties are regularly held in the bar, which makes for fun entertainment and an opportunity for the locals to have some fun in a town that is often very quiet and does not deliver much in the way of entertainment. The yearly Halloween Party is a must. The owners are two very friendly locals by the names of Johan and Winnie Jordaan. Glen Hutchinson is the almost forever on duty barman and is always happy to share information about the local scene and its people.

ps. the rump steaks and spare ribs that are served in the restaurant next door to the bar are fantastic! (So is the eisbein if you're a fan)
