Who would expect such an experience of art in the Karoo? Even finding this in Cape town would be stunning. A must for all art lovers!

If you have the chance, pop into MAGPIE : you will find quirky and arty objects created by very creative people using predominantly plastic.

This is the gallery and arts supply store so your chances of meeting the artist who created the work of art you are coveting are good. Colorful characters abound in Barrydale and this street is ground zero for them. Check out the bookstore across the street for great buys on books and a fascinating conversation with the owner.

A must do. The gallery has paintings from various artists, but is actually where you see the exceptional chandeliers made of all kind of materials. The owners are very friendly.

What an amazing eyeopener as to what you can have done with bits and bobs that mean a lot to you, but would otherwise maybe land up on a dump. The guys at Magpie will save them into something that you will then treasure. It is astounding to see what can be done with bits of crockery, beads, glass, wire etc. The end results are astonishing and sometimes quirky, but two pieces were even commissioned for the White House! Apparently the Magpie staff put up a Christmas tree in the meadow below their gallery on the 16th December each year and I am sure it must be a sight to behold. Shane is a delight to chat to and the team really take recycling to the next level!!!

Amazing ideas of using memorabilia in artwork....ever wonder what to do that with that tea set you will never use .... Amazing gallery to visit, filled with unique, customized pieces of artwork, from chandeliers to chairs.
Not only do they have this amazing gallery, Shane and Scott support the community in so many ways. One of which is to make an exquisite Xmas tree, each year using different recycled objects for the community to enjoy in their garden. Definitely worth a visit.

If you only make one stop in Barrydale, make it Magpie. The art is enchanting, incredibly imaginative and the owner a delight to talk to. Only wish was that I had a big enough suitcase to take one of their creations home with me!

A wonderful way to recycle and display items, specifically in chandeliers. They seem to largely work on commissions but there were some lovely and interesting examples in the gallery and one of the artists was actually manning it and it was wonderful to be able to speak to him and understand the history etc. Well worth a visit if you in town.

Wow. The artistic flair to be able to make such beautiful objects D'Art from junk. Do take old jewellery or inherited teasets and commission the artist to make a dream chandelier. Do not miss the lighting of the Christmas tree in December with a picnic in the meadow. All organised by the owners of Magpie.
