Unbelievable selection of vintage books. I was looking for African history books, fair to say I left with a few!

House of Books, Anton de Villiers, 37 Van RiebeckStreet Barrydale AND The Hub, drinks & snacks, Barrydale.

Off the R62 and half way down the sleepy Main Street, OK Foods on the right, adjacent is House of Books and opposite is The Hub. (OK not the best place to shop, by the way),

We popped in to browse, for the 4th or 5th time over several years, in a wonderland of second hand books that fill the whole house. The perfect break or a couple of hours away from your local lodgings.

Hub is a little drinks and snacks place. The name comes with the previous owner who offered computer/WiFi access when this was at a premium years ago. He’s just passed on ownership to another easy-going guy. Now, sit on the stoop or in the shaded little courtyard - with a couple of local workers playing chess over lunch & a young lady catching up on her online admin - for a very pleasant break.

A lovely browsing experience! The interior of the house is tidily arranged and the books are well sorted, but not so precisely that you know too soon whether your book / author is not available. Sooooo many gems to discover, also in the DVD and CD room!

A wonderful house full of books is a delight to find! While away an hour or more exploring all the rooms. The owner is a little eccentric, which adds to the charm - he is reluctant to sell too many books from one author (for fear that the next collector won't find what they want) - the dichotomy of collector vs seller is real. I will definitely go back when we're in the area again.

Oh! What a pleasure it was to stumble across this treasure of a bookhouse and its owner. I did not only find some precious books, but an interesting, enigmatic owner who easily navigates his way through the paradise of paper and knowledge that sits about on the shelves. Fascinating conversation and good books.

If one goes to the House of Books and your time is limited, Anton will help you find a specific item. If you want to treat yourself as a book lover - go there when you are not in a hurry. The journey of non-directed reading of a vast variety books organized as themes per room surprises me every time.

I spend a lot of time trawling second hand book shops and am therefore astounded when people complain that they found nothing they wanted, that is the nature of the beast, its not about what is hot now ( although these volumes do find their way onto the shelves over time) its mostly about what used to be and is no longer in vogue.

Many second hand book shops do not bother categorising their books, many just pile them up forcing you to unpack a stack to look at something or, worse yet, force you to unpack a plastic crate to determine what books are there. Here there is shelf after shelf of books grouped into categories and there is an actual owner who not only loves books but has a computer like memory as to what is where, just ask.

The owner is an actual human being, with moods and personality traits, stories and a life, not a corporate drone there to kiss ones posterior extremities for those who enjoy lording it out over the serving class, he is authentically himself. I truly enjoyed Anton's company, from his photographs which are dotted around the store (yes , he actually does other things besides books like street photography) to his stories about authors, nasty customers, the towns points of interest, making ones way in the world and talking to donkeys.

I live 4.5 hours away and I will most certainly return to the house of books again.

A most amazing visit to an incredible bookshop in Barrydale with a superb collection of all types of books, including my favourite themed books, all neatly organised in a collection that seems never ending! Owned by an interesting gentlemen Anton who has an engaging personality and is extremely knowledgable on some of my favoured topics. The best secondhand bookshop that I’ve come across in SA. Well worth a visit and thoroughly recommended ! I will be returning for sure !

What a lovely experience. Met a peculiar old chap who chatted to us about his 40-odd-thousand books. Definitely recommended.
