Meeting Edmund and his wife on their lovely organic farm was an experience. The magical story we were told was just as inspiring as the products we tasted. Apart from feeling that my companions got more in their tasting glass than me, I was completely charmed! This farm is all about working with nature and producing the best possible product - no shortcuts are taken and the bottom line is not the most important. Every drop tasted smacks of dedication and passion. I will enjoy the case delivered to my doorstep thoroughly, and we'll be back.

A “must visit” if in Wellington. Edmund was gracious to allow us an appointment 2 hours after calling. His winery defines passion and he provides a wonderful tasting, starting at his Cabernet Sauvignon and moving through his brandies and spirits. His wife has a small business making handcrafted note cards, with African highlights. If you want to see what a “boutique and rustic” winery/distillery looks like, you must visit Upland

In stark contrast to the well-manicured vineyards that grace the covers of travel magazines, Upland takes winemaking back to its natural and organic fundamentals, making wines and spirits that taste good, keep and age well, and are also good for the environment. Edmund and Elsie who own the estate are absolutely passionate about what they do and the produce of the vineyard reflects their love and care.

Speaking to Edmund as we toured the vineyards where he plants Colombard, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, he explained that the approach of using chemicals to "protect" and "support" planting flew in the face of what his many years of veterinary experience. Since taking over Upland almost 30 years ago, he has gradually transitioned his planting into a fully organic approach, respecting the natural diversity of the Western Cape. The results are amazing - aside from allowing the growth of wild Fynbos scattered around and amongst the vines, he plants olives, oak and almonds, all of which come together to support a beautiful ecosystem on the estate.

Of course, shunning fertilisers and chemicals means lower grape yields. But the results are well worth it - Edmund's wines are full bodied and complex in flavour, drawing from the terroir of the estate. Must try wines are the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, which still packs a punch with complex tannins and full bodied red fruit flavours, despite being more than 10 years old and made without sulphites and artificial preservatives.

The ruby port is delicious but the tawny port (which is unfortunately not available to taste, but is well worth the price per bottle) truly deserves its award as the best Port in South Africa.

And for those who love animals, the dogs that live in the household are adorable and a joy to be around.

A must-visit for anyone visiting the Cape Winelands!

From the beginning, it was clear that Edmund, the owner, is passionate about natural wine (as well as natural Brandy and Grappa) making! We had the opportunity to understand his approach of zero intervention production and taste a whole range of Upland’s amazig wines, ports, grappas, and brandy – which was a perfect with a dark chocolate! We loved to visit his production site and to taste wine’s directly from his cellar!

Happened upon Upland by chance and, after a bit of reading up about the place, decided that a visit was a must. I'm so glad for that decision as the experience was simply amazing. The wines, ports and brandies are simply divine and being able to discuss the nuances of the brandies and wines, the process of making each one etc. with Edmund was an absolute treat and it is clear that his knowledge is vast and his passion equal.
Do yourself a favour and make a booking. Don't expect the corporate fancy expensive structures when you get there but do expect to be enthralled by the experience and thrilled by the tasting.
