Out of the way gem

We booked a wine tasting at Journey's End because friends had organised a charity event in the UK featuring the wines and we were double booked so could not attend. This was the next best thing. Mike the winemaker, gave us detailed instructions on how to reach the vineyard, the name is the clue, it is accessed up a shaky track but you are rewarded with lovely views and a sense of remoteness. This is very much a working vineyard (tastings by appointment) and we were pleased that Mike gave us so much of his time, explaining the background, the wines, and generally being engaging. We were so pleased we went out of our way to visit JE and wish everyone there happy winekmaking!

We were told that this was a must-visit winery by a sommelier friend of ours. We took a look at the website and then drove over. Oops - tastings are by appointment only. Not sure how we missed this on the website. I went to the tasting room anyway to see if we could try to taste anyway but the place was closed up....its too bad because we had come all the way from Canada to taste wines. Maybe next time!

We are from UK and have sampled two of this Company's wines sold in a Supermarket chain in the UK; Pioneer and Blue Gum Merlot. These were the reason that we just had to visit the Vineyard to sample and purchase more to take home.

We were given a great tasting session and could not have asked for better.

If you are visiting the area then I absolutely recommend you arrange a wine tasting (this must be done prior to visit).

Their wines are incredible and needless to say we purchased plenty and will be visiting just before leaving, for more.

"The Cape Doctor", "The Huntsman", just to name two..........oh wow and not forgetting the Whites! All equally as good.

A very special thank you to Michael for the experience.

Please get more of these in the UK Supermarkets!

It's all about the wine

This is a working winery - so don't expect frills. It sits in a lovely position overlooking Somerset West, Sir Lowry's Pass and Gordon's Bay. We were there to sample the wine - and thoroughly enjoyed the experience at the hands of their young and extremely charming wine maker who took us on a journey through 12 bottles ! The last one was the Shiraz which was well worth the experience on its own. The approach is pretty grim but the English owners are developing their ambitions and already making great inroads with their Journeys End label.

Outstanding Hospitality

This was an absolutely incredible experience from start to finish. The drive through the little village highlighted the real connection Journey's End has with the surrounding communities. Upon arriving at the tasting room I was greeted with a smile and led into the newly re-furbished tasting room. The affair was hosted by both winemakers and all the wines were delicious. What amazed me was the fact that both winemakers, Leon and Mike, were able to host us. You DO NOT get this service on many other wine farms. Their knowledge was incredible and they were both charismatic and inspiring. I left with a grin, 2 cases of their delicious Chardonnay and a huge admiration for what the Gabbs had achieved at Journey's End. I couldnt recommend this Vineyard Highly enough!

The Journey can't End soon enough for these horrible people!

Have you ever made an appointment for a wine tasting well in advance, driven an hour to arrive at the winery right on time, only to be told by one of the owners upon arriving at the "tasting room" that, while they recalled making our appointment, no tasting was possible? Hard to believe, right? Well, that's exactly what happened to our party at Journey's End Vineyards. There was no apology, no excuse given, but we were told that "we can sell you some wines if you want," as if anyone travels to a winery to buy wines they are unable to taste. Why go to the winery at all?

The wine business is tough enough without treating visitors in this fashion. Oh, and if you aren't discouraged enough to avoid visiting this sorry place, be aware that unless you have an all terrain vehicle. your car will surely be damaged driving three kilometers over impossibly pot-holed unpaved dirt roads to arrive there.

So one can only hope the despicable Gabb family that own this awful excuse for a winery exits the wine business promptly, that someone with an ounce of judgment and humanity takes over, paves the road leading to the winery, and then treats visitors as if they are actually happy to receive them. Wouldn't that be a welcome development?
