Gerickes is a must visit if you are in Sedgefield. It's a 30 minute easy beach and Rock walk to the point from Seartvlei beach . Make sure its low tide and a calm day for the best experience. The walk is interesting with rock pools mussel beds and amazing features in the cliffs where the wind has sculpted beautiful features in the sandstone .Climb to the top of the point for incredible views of the coastline and surrounding rock pools gulleys and wave crash on the huge rocks . Great birdlife too with nesting seagulls and the rare Oyster catcher... keep your distance as they are protected species . A great way to spend a motor afternoon... you can swim and snorkel in the sheltered bays and pools too ! A gem on the Eden coast

Wonderful place, rich in history, but be cautious of inaccuracy - there never was a whaling station, the remains there are of shacks where fishermen stored their boats. In the early 1960's, people used to walk from Swartvlei parking area or even from Sedgefield to Gericke's to buy fresh fish when the boats came in

Walking to gericke point is like going on a brief history class. It's also called lions head as it resembles a lion. You can still find the remnants of the whaling station that was used to slaughter whales. Some holes in the rock where they used to pull the whales out. At spring tide you get these amazing pools to swim in with so many fish around you its breath taking ly beautiful. A most amazing and beautiful walk and easy enought for kids to do.

If you love long beach walks then don't miss this one.

The walk to this attraction on this beautiful beach is quite long but well worth it. It should be done at low tide to enjoy all the beautiful pool and rock formations. Great for snorkelling too. On the other side of the point the beach continues for a long stretch where beautiful sandstone cliff/rock formations can be enjoyed.

Great photo opportunities.

The views are refreshing, great for a pick-yourself-up break. Great walks along the beach - feeling safe. Ablution facilities are very well maintained. Location is not busy. There are no refreshment stations - so better to bring own stuff unless willing to buy from a bar that is approx 300meters away.
Ooh.... don't rely on the GPS navigator

My husband and I planned to do the much talked about walk to Loins Head and upon arriving realized it was high tide and unfortunately could not do the walk. We however thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent views and stunning beach.

The road to Gericke's Point along the Swartvlei Lagoon itself boasts beautiful and serene views.
During our next visit to Sedgefield we will do our homework beforehand and we cannot wait to do the walk.

Not to be missed!!

We took the turn-off from the N2 at Sedgelinks to get to Swartvlei beach - it was a bumpy ride as the road, although tarred, was badly corrugated!
From Swartvlei beach, a wonderful view of Gerickes Point can be obtained, with the rocky promontory resembling half Sphynx, half recumbent lion.
It is advisable to check the tides before attempting to explore the promontory and apparently there are guided tours (pre-book) for folk who wish to get a deeper appreciation of the uniqueness of the area. The Swartvlei beach looks deceptively near to Gerickes Point - the reality is its quite a trek, so go prepared!

A stroll along the Swartvlei Beach to Gericke’s Point at low tide is one of our Walking Club's favourite hikes. In September, the Swartvlei Lagoon shoreline next to the road that leads to the carpark is covered with a carpet of stunning Spring flowers that shouldn’t be missed.

The beach is never overcrowded and the curved bay ending at the dramatic rocky outcrop that forms the sitting lion is a splendid sight. The fossilised dune cliffs are some of the highest in South Africa and the striated exposed cliff-face is quite spectacular.

As nature lovers we love to walk along the beach to Gerickes Point and investigate the many rock pools that are exposed at low tide. The endemic African Black Oyster-catchers are plentiful and interesting to watch. It is always a thrill to climb up Gerickes lion and spot dolphins in the bay. We stay as long as we can until the tide turns and the tidal pools start to disappear under the incoming sea.

To get the most out of the walk:
1. Do it at low tide
2. Take refreshments or a picnic lunch.
3. Sunscreen, hat and some shoes to walk over sharp rocks
4. Swimming costume and towel
5. Snorkelling gear if you want to get in to explore rock pools
5.A camera

Warning - don't get caught on the wrong side of the rocks when the tide turns

Enjoy a beach walk that is pure undiluted nature at its finest.
