About John's Tours
My knowledge of the Karoo and Africa developed since childhood. Fished and hunted in Africa for the past 45years. Developed a vast knowledge and love of it's people, their cultures and it's spectacular wild life. 23 of these years, I touched base with the bushman of the Kalahari, they left big footsteps in my life. I am a registered tour guide for the Karoo and have a deep passion for what I do. The Swartberg Mountain Range and especially Gamkaskloof also known probably my ultimate destination.

This was my second trip to Prince Albert, Swartberg Pass and Die Hel. Once again did not disappointv. John has an incredible knowledge of flora and fauna and also of the region and is a very entertaining tour guide. He has a passion for what he does and therefore makes the trip an unforgettable experience. Although he has done the trips many many times, he never tries from sharing his enthusiasm with his guests. He does not just get into the vehicle and drive, he stops regularly and let's his passengers have many photo shoot stops. I would highly recommend a trip with John's Donkey, not only will you learn a lot, but you may also become firm friends, as I have done. Most enjoyable and I know my trips to that area are going to be many in the future. The scenery is spectacular. If it does not touch your soul, then you are not human. Please support this wonderful tour guide and his all that he is trying to promote.

We went to the Hell and back with John Claassens - or better known as John's Donkey. The donkey in this case was a very comfortable 4x4! As a fellow tourist guide I must compliment John on his knowledge and how he presents a good story. I envy his passion for "the place", the valley, the mountains and Africa. With John we explored the valley after the terrible fire of November 2019! It was a learning curve for all involved! John made the trip extremely memorable for all of us and we went away great friends with everyone connected to Bougainvilla Guest House where we were accommodated in a superb en suite room. They welcomed us, and our little dog with open arms and made sure that we were all comfortable. They even "baby sat" the dog when we could not take it to the restaurant! HOSPITALITY in capital letters.

What a privilege it was to travel with John & Charlene to The Hell! John knows every plant, every stone and rock, all the cottages and the history of the earlier colourful characters who lived in the area. He entertained us with his stories form where the Swartberg Pass starts to The Hell and back! We stopped on several occasions so that John could tell a story or explain something to the group. I was even privileged to meet Anna Joubert, a born Hellin, at her home. Here you do not rush, you slow down and enjoy the experience. We had a lovely packed lunch and even enjoyed a cold beer. Treat yourself and go on tour with John Donkey. Thank you again. I'm definitely going to join you again. Daan (Numbi) Terblanche Grahamstown
