Being my second KGG experience, it did not disappoint. My first was in Oct 2020 at the Prince Albert KGG. Graaf Rienette riding and environment experience was just as good. Accommodation, food, wine and overall organisation by John and his team was excellent. KGG id an excellent way to experience the vast beauty and hospitality of the Karoo and to experience part of the wonderful Karoo you would otherwise unlikely have opportunity to experience. Be warned though, whilst by no means a race, you still need to do some training. The Karoo terrain is unforgiving if you have not done some cycle training and conditioning, even if on an e-bike.
I highly recommend both the Prince Albert and Graff Rienette KGG experiences and will certainly repeat both in time as well as participate in the other KGG experiences currently being considered. Well done John, Frances and team

This was one of the. BEST tours we have ever done. The riding was superb. Each day was quite different and magnificent in its own way. It was also great to do only 60km a day because it gave you afternoons to do whatever to want, be it massages, drinks, shopping or chilling with new friends.

The B&B that we stayed in was really comfortable and I would highly recommend it. Onse Rus owners could not do enough for us. Beautiful room, pool and a great location. We were there for a few extra days and their hospitality was beyond reproach.

John and Francis had the tour extremely well organized from breakfast, to water stops, to drinks at the end of the ride and superb dinners. They are an absolute treat to spend time with.

I was worried about the numbers on the tour, before we left, but everything was so well organized and everything went without a glitch.

We loved every minute of it

We’ll be back.

Let's just start with the pass.... A bucket list challenge, not to be taken lightly, but it delivered all round; incredible scenery, GRINDING climbs, exhilarating descents, all in all, a tour so well planned and executed by John and team, this should be on every cyclists' bucket list.
Well done to John and his entire team, Graaff Reinet is already in the diary..!

It almost feels odd for me to be writing a less than glowing review of our experience about the Gravel Grinder Tour at Prince Albert given that all the reviews written here provide excellent ratings. I do not doubt the honesty of these reviews as there are aspects and descriptions on most of them that I also experienced on what was the last tour of the season. Maybe therein lies part of the reason why this much anticipated Tour disappointed.
The tour fizzled out together with our elevated spirit when we were informed at a dinner event on the Saturday evening that the group had been exposed to a rider who was on the bus that transported us to our first day ride and who had tested positive for COVID -19. He was evidently feeling ill when he got on the bus but nothing was said. There was no pre screening and nobody was asked to wear masks by the Organisers on the bus, but we were asked to open the windows which were soon closed given the external early morning temperatures. I believe it is the responsibility of the Organisers to enforce health protocols during a pandemic particularly when you are transporting a group of people on your bus. It is difficult for a client to get on a bus and ask a group they barely know to mask up. This oversight created a negative chain of events.
The most disappointing thing was that once the announcement was made on Saturday night, we were told that we should just find a few paths to ride on Sunday morning. So effectively from then on we were left on our own. There was no attempt to provide an alternative plan which included the Organisers. It just seemed to me and the group I was in, that the Organisers developed what is commonly referred to as organizational tour fatigue and the feeling was that they simply ran out of steam . Obviously because our group was exposed we had to isolate at home for the following 10 days after the tour ended. Further inconvenience we had to endure and would have been preventable if the Organisers had not let their guard down. I just hope that the Organisers learn from this experience and tighten up on their health protocols particularly while the pandemic is still with us.

Apart from this the riding for the two out of three days was enjoyable and challenging at times and the food and especially the wine selection was good.

Hi Lance, Thank you for your review, we were as disappointed as you were with the situation that unfolded. I look at it from the standpoint that out of the 9 meals and 3 rides that are normally laid on, only one 1 ride and 2 meals were affected by the isolation we had to immediately implement, those meals went ahead with further precautions but the ride did not, we did however give input as to where one could go and ride. Yes we have learnt from the experience and have further updated our communications processes before the events and our procedure as to when participants arrive. We will in future have stricter routines on the bus trips and we are installing an additional air conditioning system in the bus that provides better fresh air circulation. Our resultant isolation action prevented any further infection and only the participant and his wife became infected. They are both doing well at this time. We are happy to give you a discount on your next Karoo GravelGrinder event if you so wish, but please understand that we are unable to control COVID infections in any way. Our reaction and consequent isolation procedures will always be the same if we encounter any person on the tour that tests positive during their participation on the tour. We ask again as we do in our communications we send out that if there is any doubt as to your health, you refrain from participating, and we will transfer your booking to a new date for you to enjoy when you are healthy again.

We have just participated in our second, well supported Karoo Gravel Grinder tour with John, Frances and the Gravel Grinder team and have no hesitation in recommending this cycling, social and culinary adventure for any MTB or gravel bike enthusiast who enjoys the outdoors, meeting likeminded people and wants to have a really great time. You will experience very well researched, interesting and organised itineraries for both the bikers and any non-riding partners, all hosted by John and Frances.

The routes through the mountains and deserts are spectacular and manageable for the average cyclist who will need to be well prepared for some hard but very enjoyable riding. The accommodation provided, organisation and level of professionalism is outstanding and we have thoroughly enjoyed the three-day experiences offered in Prince Albert and Graaff-Reinet so far, and cannot wait for the next one.

This was our second Karoo Gravel Grinder and after the wonderful time in Prince Albert we were excited to try the Graaff Reinet experience.

As before the pre-event communication was top notch and we arrived comfortable in the knowledge that John and his great team had every thing under control - all we had to do was pitch up and ride!

The cycling is spectacular with varied terrain, amazing wildlife along the way and views that go on for ever. As always the water points are excellent and the "lunch and load" experience on day 2 was a lot of fun and made for a good change.

The accommodation at the Drostdy Hotel is excellent. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. The fact that all participants were staying at the one hotel is the one marked difference (other than the cycling routes) between the Prince Albert and the Graaff Reinet events. Both are wonderful in their own ways but staying in the Drostdy certainly made it feel more like a group event. The meals were great and the other restaurants/dinners conveniently located within walking distance.

Definitely an experience to do - the only difficult choice is picking between the Prince Albert and Graaf Reinet! Either way we will be back.

This tour is an absolute definite for the bucket list.

We arrived in Prince Albert expecting a warm weekend only to have the heavens open and 8 years worth of rain fall in two days! John and his team were brilliant in making new plans to accommodate the weather change and we had the most amazing adventures mud-grinding! 😂

Even though we did not do the full intended Programme, we cycled every day through the most beautiful scenery. We were pushed to our limits on the pass climb, and had a breath taken away by the Karoo splendour.

The calories lost on the bicycle were very quickly replaced with the culinary experiences provided every day. What an absolute treat.

We have been home for a week and have already planned our return!

Thank you John, Frances, Sarah-May and all the support crew. Your operation is seamless and every detail has been considered 👏

It was great in all respects. It is clear that a lot of thought has gone into the planning because everything ran smoothly. The overall experience was classy and better than any similar event participated in to date. Excellence included the riding experience, routes, support, meals, social events, logistics etc.

John and Francis run a slick, organised, well thought out tour. They have thought of every detail. We never paid for a drink or a meal for the entire 3 days. It was really nice staying in the same place the whole ride. I would recommend staying on the final day (we drank too much wine at lunch to drive!) There was some tough cycling. You have to be fit - even on an ebike. The water stops, every 20kms, are very well stocked. We did take (too many) snacks. You also need your own gels/hydration juice. Two water bottles on your bike is best. We plan on doing a Gravel Grinder tour every year. It is one way to force us to keep fit.

What an amazing experience! My husband went as a rider and me as a non - rider companion. The B&B we stayed in was really comfortable and we met so many really interesting people. We were entertained and looked after really well - and were fed the most delicious food, wines & craft beer during our stay. The entire process was brilliantly organised and it was easy to deal with the organisers through out the process .
We highly recommend the Karroo GravelGrinder and will definitely be doing another of their tours soon!
