About
African Relish is a cooking school based in Prince Albert in the Karoo in South Africa. It is approximately 370 kilometers from Cape Town and near to Oudshoorn. We run a cooking school in this small town that has an abundance of produce and is famous for its lamb production. Courses are held on a daily basis or over weekends. Daily courses are held on request on half day format. Travellers either plan ahead and book accordingly or visit us on arrival to see what might be happening or what we can arrange at short notice. We also use the facility for events and have had many happy couples married on the premises. We like to encourage adding a foodie emphasis to what they have planned and this has proved to be great added value. Team building around a cooking theme has also proved very popular with participants running barbecue / braai or "potjie" competitions. It is a beautiful venue which surprises and built specifically to enhance a great culinary experience.

Visiting this gem in Prince Albert on our way to Thesen Island. We were recommended a few restaurants in Prince Albert but found this one on Trip Advisor. We made arrangements and booked a table before hand and Hess were more than happy to respond by email.

We ordered the spicy boerewors dumplings and the "obvious" pizza. Both were shared and they were to delicious. The restaurant however should invest in sharper knives please.

We were served by the most friendly waiter which made our experience at this gem of a restaurant so much more memorable. We can recommend them for a great meal.

We ate lunch at the African Relish cafe. It’s part of the cookery school so we expected a real treat. The menu is small so one would assume that each dish was delicious. I ordered the trout salmon salad which came with half the ingredients mentioned on the menu plus a sour cream dressing (not mentioned) dripped over the salad. As a non dairy eater it was almost inedible. If you’re going to include a dressing mention the type of dressing in the menu.
My husband had the vegetarian curry and rice. The rice mound was so hard he could hardly separate it to eat.
The service was moderate although the owner ( we think) was quite indifferent.
Nice setting but disappointing food- specially for a cookery school!

Very poor service and not very nice food. The waiter did his best but was clearly untrained and struggling to do his job. The kitchen was unable to get all our meals on the table at the same time and so two of us only got our food 10 minutes after the others. There were odd combinations of meat and side dishes on the plate, including coleslaw with a hot meat dish. And the lamb and the pork had the same cooking sauce. The whole experience was disappointing especially as they call themselves a cooking school.

Our family of 7 went for a cooking class while spending the Christmas holidays in Prince Albert. Our chef, Alexa, and her staff, were awesome and we enjoyed the day tremendously. Thank you. Wish we could have a repetition of the day every Christmas💕

Thank you Lavenderants for your input and I am glad that you enjoyed the time. You will be pleased to know that we have had two days of rain so the parched earth is looking a lot happier! Best Philip

Lovely food - creative without being too fancy, flavourful. The setting is lovely. You can sit in the backyard, or on the porch which is more protected. They have a real pizza oven, we were told pizza was goo (but we went for lamb, which was excellent).

Two years ago we had a delicious lunch on the lawn, this year it was more bad school dinners. Soggy ‘crispy’ potatoes with the over salted, over barbecue sauced pork, actually everything had a dark brown sauce on it and everything tasted of salt. The pizzas looked good! The staff including the manager seemed reluctant to involve themselves with serving except for one extremely hardworking waiter who was making pizza and rushing around asking table what he could do. Such a disappointment.

I can understand waiting staff needing leadership but having sent back an entire plate of inedible food you do wonder what the manager’s role was, perhaps she should have noticed or perhaps she should have cared. Obviously not.

This was the only eating venue in Prince Albert with outside seating area for dinner that we could find! We wanted to eat outside during the Covid pandemic. The staff were attentive and the food was good. Many people used this for pizza takeaways which looked very good indeed.

Nice little spot in Prince Alfred. We were in a big group and they managed us well. Attentive hosts, good food, lovely outside area in good weather.

Staff professional and friendly.

Thanks for the lovely review, we have been blessed with good weather. I will pass on your kind words to the staff and management team. Come and join us in the kitchen for a half or full day cooking class or a lovely foodie tour next time you visit.

A Charcuterie course in Prince Albert at African Relish! This was AMAZING! The perfect venue, hospitality and immaculate organization made this a weekend to remember. Of course Neil Jewell is incredible!

I've been looking forward to eating at African Relish for some time after their exposure on tv as well as the reviews in Eat Out magazine. As a cook myself, I was also interested to see the kitchen where cooking classes are presented. What an utter disappointment. Although the open plan kitchen was well appointed and the chandelier lovely, the food was mediocre and not well presented. The waitress, although very friendly couldn't describe the dishes. When asked if the crackling on the pork belly was crispy, she didn't know what that was! My cheese soufflé could have done with more sauce and my husband's pork terrine with some sort of relish instead of a blob of mustard. The pork belly was dry and the very ordinary stir fried vegetables not to the standard of a good restaurant. The plates were ice cold which didn't keep the mashed potato warm on the plate. As for the malva pudding, a dry cake which would have been far better served with lots of hot custard instead of the blob of cream. Altogether an expensive disappointment
