About
African Relish is a cooking school based in Prince Albert in the Karoo in South Africa. It is approximately 370 kilometers from Cape Town and near to Oudshoorn. We run a cooking school in this small town that has an abundance of produce and is famous for its lamb production. Courses are held on a daily basis or over weekends. Some of the weekend courses are themed (charcuterie, breadmaking, tapas etc.) and often have visiting chefs. Daily courses are held on request in either half or full day format. Travellers either plan ahead and book accordingly or visit us on arrival to see what might be happening or what we can arrange at short notice. We also use the facility for events and have had many happy couples married on the premises. We like to encourage adding a foodie emphasis to what they have planned and this has proved to be great added value. Team building around a cooking theme has also proved very popular with participants running barbecue / braai or "potjie" competitions. It is a beautiful venue which surprises and built specifically to enhance a great culinary experience.

I attended a Jazz Festival in the quaint and picturesque town of Prins Albert from 6-7 May 2023. After the show in the beautiful NG church in the centre of town, I attended the jamming session at African relish.
A beautiful venue in the main street which had been converted into a festival/show venue for purposes of the festival. The atmosphere and ambience were pleasant and we had a wonderful experience.
The facility has a retail area with all manner of delicasies at entrance, a restaurant, a coffee bar and a pizzeria. We ordered wine, pizzas, beers and host chocolate. The food was good.

Very poor service and not very nice food. The waiter did his best but was clearly untrained and struggling to do his job. The kitchen was unable to get all our meals on the table at the same time and so two of us only got our food 10 minutes after the others. There were odd combinations of meat and side dishes on the plate, including coleslaw with a hot meat dish. And the lamb and the pork had the same cooking sauce. The whole experience was disappointing especially as they call themselves a cooking school.

Two years ago we had a delicious lunch on the lawn, this year it was more bad school dinners. Soggy ‘crispy’ potatoes with the over salted, over barbecue sauced pork, actually everything had a dark brown sauce on it and everything tasted of salt. The pizzas looked good! The staff including the manager seemed reluctant to involve themselves with serving except for one extremely hardworking waiter who was making pizza and rushing around asking table what he could do. Such a disappointment.
I can understand waiting staff needing leadership but having sent back an entire plate of inedible food you do wonder what the manager’s role was, perhaps she should have noticed or perhaps she should have cared. Obviously not.

Visiting this gem in Prince Albert on our way to Thesen Island. We were recommended a few restaurants in Prince Albert but found this one on Trip Advisor. We made arrangements and booked a table before hand and Hess were more than happy to respond by email.
We ordered the spicy boerewors dumplings and the "obvious" pizza. Both were shared and they were to delicious. The restaurant however should invest in sharper knives please.
We were served by the most friendly waiter which made our experience at this gem of a restaurant so much more memorable. We can recommend them for a great meal.

We did the cooking class that was a 5. Shane the cook was outstanding and very skilled and patent with us. We wanted to experience true Karoo menu and it was that and more. This should be on your things to do in Prince Albert.

We were lucky to be there for the first open Monday evening of the season. Staff was friendly and service efficient. Tables are neatly set with white linen table cloth and good wine glasses. We ordered a red wine which was a tad warm, requiring an ice bucket to get to an acceptable temperature.
Menu options are interesting. Pizzas were perfect, worth adding African Relish to your P-A itinerary.

The pizzas are delicious and this is what the place is well known. The relish pizza was excellent. Service was fine. Prices were average.

We arrived for dinner in shorts and sat outside in brilliant weather.
The service was exceptionally polite and friendly and we decided to share a pizza as a starter.
I don't like pizza but this pizza was the best I ever had! Paper thin crust and a topping to die for with extra garlic on the side.
Main course were Italian meatballs with pasta - juicy and tender homemade meatballs - excellent!
Prices very reasonable.
Worth a visit!

Congratulations Hendry and team on an outstanding meal in the most trying of circumstances!!!
We were part of a cycle tour and this was our first night in Prince Albert. It absolutely bucketted with very unexpected rain.
The staff were super-friendly and efficient and the food was absolutely incredible. Gluten-free accommodations were hassle-free and delicious.

Superb food, cooked to perfection. Great vibe in a relaxed bistro venue. Menu mainly offers Italian fare and could do with a few African options.
