About
Founded in 2012, Red Room Gallery is a pioneering art gallery upon which unique, contemporary African art is exposed to the greater international art market. The gallery seeks to source and display African works focusing primarily on black artists from across the continent, providing them with a means to market and profit from their talent and personal brand. The art on show is anything but the clichéd generic trinkets one finds on the side of the road, but alluring representations of the realities of African people. It is not African art through a Western lens, but African art seen through African eyes. Our work also prioritises artist development, as we provide opportunities for international exhibitions. Through this, we hope to expose the world to art that lives and breathes artistic life, and tells the stories of Africans both at war and at peace with their past. Red Room Gallery seeks to call and unite African artists to create a market for their stories yet unheard.

For any art lover visiting Cape Town, especially if interested in investment art, do take the time to visit Maik at his home based art gallery.I highly recommend it. It's always a memorable experience.

The art collectionat Red Room is incredible! Amazing art pieces. One also has a unique view of the natural surrounds and mountains while appreciating the magnificent art works.

Now that I've moved to Cape Town, I'll definitely be visiting Red Room more often and hopeful buy a few art works this year.

I have visited Maik's interesting fine selection of works a couple of times, always greeted with a welcoming smile and a offer of coffee. Maik's eye and knowledge for investment art have always impressed me, how he is able to spot the next generation of investment artists. The South African art industry need more such refreshingly honest curator/ art collectors. I'm proud to be associated with such a curator/ space!

Maik Kobald is a wonderful host who introduces guests and clients with much expertise to the amazing range of contemporary African art in his Hout Bay home. The setting is stunning, and invites to quiet and peaceful comtemplation of the carefully selected pieces. Maik is a respected industry expert who built trusted relationships with many young and upcoming artists all over the country. It's worth listening to his view on the local art landscape - he shares his insights with much empathy and understanding for the artists' challenges and creative trajectories.

Maik Kobald of Red Room Gallery has a wonderful eye for spotting upcoming young artists. Add to this his wonderful home where he runs his atelier, the offer of great coffee and or a fabulous glass of wine and yu cannot ask for a better setting in which to view and enjoy South African Art.

Redroom is a fantastic gallery with an incredible collection of contemporary South African artists. There are pieces that are accessible and affordable by exciting artists establishing themselves all the way to signature collectors pieces by celebrated artists like Dianne Victor, William Kentridge and Robert Hodgins to name just a few. If you are in Cape Town and interested in art definitely give Redroom a look!

Warm, approachable and well considered. We have spent many wonderful times at Red Room gallery with curator Maik Kobald and friends, while perusing some beautiful local pieces. The gallery most certainly differentiates itself on a strict 'fine art for investment' basis with a superbly curated selection of South African art built into a modest, but modern hilltop home. Admire the stellar Hout Bay valley views with a chilled glass of wine, and the ideal investment art companion. An absolute treat.
