    Not a great experience
Visited on the wine tram...we did the wine tasting and had a charcuterie platter. This was expensive and there was a large party going on which meant we struggled to hear our wine expert I found the wines disappointing and we didnt purchase any. Amazing art work in the gardens but overall not a great wine tasting experience.

    Great visit.
This estate was part of our tour from the Wine Tram. We had the wine tasting with nougat - it was a great experience. The ladies attending everyone were great. They recommended great wine without any rush. Great experience overall.

Wow - what a place! The Merlot isn’t bad either
Had a fantastic time at the Grand Provence vineyard; facilities for all to enjoy - and a great lunch menu. Indulged in a wine-tasting and bought a few bottles of the delicious Merlot to take home. Highly recommended for an enjoyable visit

    Under The Trees
Grand Provence is an iconic wine farm located in the Franschhoek valley. We visited as part of the Franschhoek Wine Tram (yellow route) experience, and I loved that we got to take a tractor ride from the train platform through the vineyards to the cellar door (seating area is covered for those windy/rainy days). The Vineyard has the main tasting area (inside) with some outside seating options under the big trees as well. Close to the tasting area there is also a restaurant, as well as an art gallery. As it was a beautiful day and we were a very large group we sat outside and got to experience their tasty wines, including the farms natural beauty, as well as art pieces spread around the gardens. It is also good to note that they have a big jungle-gym play area for the kids.

    Quaint place
We visited Grand Provence earlier this month. It was beautiful, quiet, serene and pleasant. We tried the desert wines and the cheese platter. They had a good variety to offer. The art sculptures were spread over the whole area and worth looking 👀

    Nice experience
Grande Provence Wine Estate has over a 325-year history. Nestled in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley in South Africa’s Western Cape, there are lush vines spread across 47 acres. Rolling vistas frame the valley floor and heighten the drama of the rugged mountains beyond. This is heartland South African Wine Country at its very finest. I enjoyed their Angels Tears Tasting which was, AT Sauvignon Blanc, AT Muscat, AT Rosé, AT Merlot/Cab Red Blend, and a Nougat Pairing.

    Lovely lunch at the Bistro
Visited Grand Provence under our own steam rather than on the Wine Tram. Enjoyed a lovely light lunch & glass of excellent Sauvignon Blanc under the trees at the Bistro. Beautiful setting in the Franschhoek valley surrounded by the stunning mountain vistas. Worth a visit...

    Don’t expect guidance
Never been to a such a disorganised winery, no one there to guide you to either tastings or meals and what options you may have. We enquired in tasting room if they served a cheese platter to which we were informed no( even though it’s on their tasting menu) we left and came across bistro, all tables had a reserve sign on but on enquiry a waiter got us a table. Food was good but experience marred by lack of directions. We also seen and heard many other visitors saying the same

    Wine tasting!
This is a winery on the actually wine tram route (not buses). Smart looking place with an art gallery & some interesting sculptures in the gardens. The wine tasting experience was pretty average, little enthusiasm from the staff, made it a lack lustre experience.

Lovely stop on the vineyard trail
On the tram 🚃 tour. It was busy on a February Saturday so suggest a different day. Really beautiful vineyard. Lots of nice art items inside the shop and out. Oyster 🦪 bar if you like them.

This is a beautiful place to stop for lunch. The food quality was excellent and we all enjoyed our salads (my wife's beetroot salad was fantastic) and the setting lovely with spaciously laid out tables and a kids play area for the little ones. I had a Caesar Salad which was good. The setting is beautiful and worth the stop

We visited the restaurant for dinner and it's in such a beautiful setting with great sculptures throughout the gardens. The ambience of the restaurant was very romantic and the food and service was excellent.

This Estate was visited as part of a ½ day trip on the Franschhoek Wine Tram. The first two Atlas Swift and Rickety Bridge were both excellent. We were looking forward to ‘Oysters and Bubbles’ as advertised at Grande Provence to finish off a lovely afternoon. However what we got was a rather bad experience

We ordered two wine tastings and 6 oysters. The last of the six oysters I tried made me immediately gag and spit it out as it was bad. Fortunately I didn’t swallow the offensive shellfish. I ate 3 my fiancée ate two.

Whilst it is very poor and could be dangerous to serve anything other than fresh oysters it was management response to the incident which I also thought was extremely poor.

I summoned the assistant manager (Job) who apologised profusely and gave me, at my request, your contact details.

We left Grande Provence with, literally, a bad taste in our mouths. Finally at about 7:30pm that evening my fiancée started feeling ill and was then violently sick with vomiting and gastrointestinal problems (to put it politely). I have little doubt (given our documented food intake for the day) that another, but less obviously toxic, oyster was responsible for her malaise.

Obviously my primary reason for writing to the ‘Estate / Hospitality Manager was to report the incident of bad oysters but I also took the opportunity to point out some other ‘issues’ with the Grand Provence Estate experience.

My fiancée has previously visited this Estate several years ago when tasting included, palate cleansers, water and tasting notes. Such peripheral niceties now seem to have abandoned in favour of harvesting the tourist dollars as fast as possible - a sad and flawed business model in my opinion.

As mentioned we purchased two tastings and were brought the wine with a very rapid explanation of each whereupon all bottles were removed leaving us to try to remember what had been said about each of six wines - really - what on earth is that about - no tasting notes, no pen and paper?

I’ve been to many wine tastings and vineyards from New Zealand to France, Portugal and across Europe - in the majority of these one usually gets a small plate of bread/ cheese/ charcuterie AND water - to cleanse the palate between tastes. NONE of these were available at Grande Provence. Water was provided on request.

It must be said that this practice is not confined to this estate - it appears to have been adopted across several others.

The response from management as to the issue of bad oysters is as below for a balanced reference. Personally I thought it was a bit disappointing and a bit of a ‘textbook - lesson learned’ response to what could have been a much worse experience.

Thank you for your email.
Regarding the oysters; this is very disappointing news as we receive a fresh consignment of oysters daily from our supplier. I will most definitely bring this up with them as well and further investigate .
Regarding your other comments; thank you for your input. I will use these comments in future training and planning to better our product.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact me and sharing your views.

This place was very disappointing. The waitress was beyond rude which was very surprising considering everywhere else in South Africa we visited, people were so friendly. We ordered a starter and two mains which she brought at the same time and just slapped on the table. No thank you or smile from her once! The food was very nice however. Recommend the kingklip if you do visit.

Terrible undercooked food, we ordered the seafood platter and the prawns, mussels were so undercooked it was inedible. The flies also ate the little food that was cooked which didn’t help. Horrible experience.

Our favourite stop on the Wine Tram experience.

At the hearth of a beautiful valley with vineyards surrounded by mountains, this estate offers you wine tasting in nice sitting areas, indoor and outdoor; fine food; an elegant mix of historic Dutch architecture and modern design; and a beautiful art gallery.
