Fabulous drive, but must do slow! Steep and winding. Has some stop off areas for great pics. Lots of cyclists the day we traveled. Not sure how they did it!

Breathtaking views over the mountain pass. Lots of safe spots to pull over and take in the views of the Franshhoek Valley

Took a drive up the pass to stop and take photos of the town in the valley below. Stunning views from up there! Well worth the drive.

Having not driven the Franschhoek Pass in a long time I immediately grabbed the opportunity when it came up. The pass is about 13 km (give or take) and is slow and winding. Although the driver needs to focus a lot on this route, there are some areas where you can pull over and take in the beautiful views which make it worthwhile. On the one side of the pass you have the town of Franschhoek with the pass looking over it in certain sections, and on the other side you have Theewaterskloof dam which is the largest dam providing water to the City of Cape Town and surrounds. The pass can get very busy and has been closed on numerous occasions in the past because of rock slides, so keep that in mind when planning your trip. Also, something to note is that during winter when it is really cold, the surrounding mountains can be covered in snow which is always special to see.

We were in Elgin and decided to see if the Theewaterskloof Dam had filled up already.
I was pleasantly surprised that the Dam had recovered so well from the Drought of 2018 and 2019. When I was there in May 2018 I was devastated at the the 'Stream in a Desert". In August of 2018 it had improved but still not to full capacity.
I suppose there must have been lots of Snow on the Mountains to have created that beautiful scene.
Then we ascended the Mountain Pass and the different layers and colours of the Mountain never cease to amaze.
With my son driving I could just enjoy the scenery and the Flora was so beautiful after the Winter rains.
Coming down the other side and see the Franschhoek Valley in the setting Sun was stunning

What an amazing experience! Beautiful scenery and the Theewaterskloof Dam was full. Wonderful seeing this mass of water, with the sun glistening over.

If visiting the SW Cape, this road is a must-visit. It is really safe and well constructed and each turn gives new amazing vistas. However, make sure you come when the clouds are not down on the mountains. Make sure you go on the Theewaterskloof Dam where the view is also very pleasing.
