In previous years we have done various winery tours with this company whilst staying in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch and this year we tried the beer and wine tour and had another lovely afternoon out with Danelle. She is so knowledgeable about the processes, the wineries, grapes, history of the place and she is so lovely and great company. Everything is done at your pace and if there are certain types of wine/grape you want to try she'll take you to that winery otherwise leave it to her as you will have a great time. Admittedly, out of curiosity I did try the wine tram the following day but the experience was no where near what you would get with La Rochelle Tours. You are all crammed on to a bus or train, they say you have an hour at each winery but the reality is you only get about 45mins by the time you get transferred from train to tasting room or waiting for bus to leave due to overcrowding. Amongst the hoardes and when the wine eventually comes to you makes for a very hurried and rushed affair as we didn't get to see around a couple of the wineries as we had to rush for transport and even then we couldn't get back on the train as it was packed. Also note that a couple of the planned stops on their route they no longer stop at. With La Rochelle and Danelle, you are comfortably driven around the estates taking in the fantastic scenery enroute, whilst she tells you loads about the wineries the history and anything you care to ask. At the wineries, she takes great care of you and ensures you are swiftly looked after as she is known by them all. Loads of background information given and there is no rush, you get to look around the winery and behind the scenes which you don't get on the wine tram, and if you want to buy wine you are not worrying about missing the transport. Basically, if you want the cheap and cheerful buffet option then take the tram or spend a little more and have al la carte, a more personal touch and experience, comfort and greater knowledge particularly as you have gone all that way to get there in the first place, then Danelle is your choice by far. We will definitely be sticking with La Rochelle tours in the future.
