Spent two weeks volunteering at this amazing sanctuary. It was the experience of a lifetime. Staff and other volunteers were so kind, patient, helpful and welcoming. Getting to work with the rescued monkeys was a dream come true and I can’t wait to return. While most volunteers are young people, I was a good bit older but made to feel most welcome by all.
Plenty of opportunities to experience the wider area. We did a two day trip to Kruger National Park at the end of our stay. Recommend staying for as long as possible as two weeks, while totally doable and so enjoyable, just wasn’t long enough for me!

Spent 6 months at the Vervet Monkey Foundation in Limpopo as an intern and I can't wait to come back... 💕🐒

I loved working with the monkeys. Especially their foster-mum program for orphaned babies and integration of ex-pet monkeys into established monkey troops is so rewarding. I loved how much I learned here on a daily basis!
The work does get very stressful and hard at times, but it's all worth it when you see those cheeky little monkeys bouncing around.

Apart from the work itself, I loved life in the bush. There's something beyond beautiful about the simplicity of living in a wooden cabin surrounded by nature and wildlife.
Everything is centered around nature and sustainability - from their composting toilets (can't waste precious water by flushing!) to the amazing vegan food.

The team is amazing and very dedicated to their work. I'm grateful to have made friends for life at this place. ❤️

Definitely recommend volunteering here - or at least to go on a very educational short tour. 😇

I was a volunteer here from Feb 27th, 2029 to May 26th, 2019 and it was a blast. I encourage anyone to take a tour of the VMF if you are in the area of Tzaneen, South Africa.

I don’t know what the tour is like, but it would be worth looking into. All I can say it was an experience of a lifetime. At the same time, it’s sad they have to exist due to man being so cruel.

The first photo is me eating a fresh Guava off a tree near what we called The River. Second photo is of Rocio grooming me. She had 3 attempts to socialize with other Vervet Monkeys and failed. The third photo is of Armies who was hit by a car when he was younger. Last photo is of a Bandit Troop Vervet that roams the property.

Also Tzaneen has some wonderful places to eat at.

This was a unique experience. The guides walked us through the grounds and talked us through all the wonderful work that is being done to preserve the little creatures. I trust that much more support and funding will be available to continue with this excellent work.

It was a really nice and interesting outing. It was also inspiring to see a group of mostly volunteers so committed to helping monkeys in need. Worth a visit or even a day of volunteering if you have the time and inclination.

We forgot to make a reservation , but just give it a try because we were disappointed by the rest of Tzaneen.
We were lucky, there was a family that did not show up and we took there place.
A fantastic guide, all are volunteers from all over the world ! Young students all.
There are only the local monkeys so do not expect a big diversity.
The stories of animal behavier and daily habits were realy great !
The animals are treated with respect , they stay wild.
Do not expect monkey trics and things !
This is a hospital/sanctuary in the positve meaning !

I have been fortunate to spend some time at the Vervet Monkey Foundation..The staff and volunteers are single minded in their mission to rescue, rehabilitate and release any monkeys that are brought to the foundation

Their knowledge, integrity, and team dynamic make for an excellent recipe for success. Monkeys come first. There is no question about it. The volunteers are all incredible and come from all over the globe. Many .. in fact, most return time after time to continue the work they have become so passionate about.

If you are looking for a volunteer programme that makes a difference to the planet, in surroundings that are conducive to success.. then this is the place for you.

You will never be disappointed, saddened sometimes by mans cruelty to animals, but the team there are family, and you will be welcomed with open arms. It is certainly not a holiday camp, work is vital to keep it going.

Enjoy!

The experience we had was amazing. The monkeys are well kept and cared for in natural, very large enclosures. The tour guide could answer our questions and every member of the team we walked past, welcomed us and were happy to share information about the programme. Will definitely visit again!

Not humanizing the monkeys, but actually saving them and finding wild adoptive mothers for the orphans. After seeing other places, this is the one I can believe in. All extremely sensible people. Volunteers come to work and help, not play with monkeys that later ill not know what to do.

Our friend, Elena Lopez Carre from Spain, visited this sanctuary and spent some time with the owners. Her feedback is that she is EXTREMELY impressed with the wonderful work done here and the professional way Volunteers from all over the world are treated her!
