About
Just 10 km outside Jeffreys Bay and 70 km from Port Elizabeth, between the Gamtoos and Kabeljous rivers, lies the farm Papiesfontein. Here, on this special piece of land, the unique combination of bush, river and beach come together to offer you an unforgettable ride. Experienced guides escort riders twice daily along the 13km circular route. The trail takes about two hours to complete, leading through beautiful fynbos coastal vegetation, towards the Gamtoos river with breathtaking views from the dunes and finally returning along a 6 km stretch of deserted beach. Here on this isolated beach, riders can canter their mounts in the shallows or have an exhilarating gallop on the sand. The trail provides magnificent views of the area and affords ample opportunity to spot a variety of bird species, tortoises, bushbuck, plant and marine life. Imagine whale watching from horseback!

Wild, wet & wonderful ride
Mar 2021 • Friends
What an awesome adventure, not for the faint hearted but most certainly one not to be missed..

Start off through the bushes then onto an open private beach and in the ocean, what an adventure..

You get to ride at a good pace & the instructor is very good at teaching you what to do & when.

Well worth it, great value!
Look forward to doing this again.

Beautiful beach ride
Nov 2020 • Solo
The views are amazing. Be honest about your riding experience level as some of the horses are full of life and fast! They have horses for all levels though.

Fully recommended, horses taken care well and an amazing experience!

Galloping on the beach - Tick :)
Dec 2019
A magical day for myself , daughter and niece. (19 & 24)
We loved every minute. We said we were intermediate and our horses were perfect. My niece has lots of experience but because she hadn't ridden for a long time decided to be cautious and go with the flow.
It was a very hot day but there was a good sea breeze even during the dry first section and dunes. I took water in a backpack but never needed it. Make sure you are well hydrated before you leave. My gallop would've been more comfortable without the backpack. If you want to take water, I suggest a running belt, but no one else carried water.
The scenery is magnificent and it is amazing how strong the horses are to get up the steep dune. Nice to read other people's descriptions of the trail. The highlight was galloping along the shoreline and my horse (Trutie) ran in the water and to feel the spray was fantastic. Great adrenaline rush :)

Something to remember forever!

Me and my wife took this amazing beach horse riding with nearly no experience but it's been incredible! Very professional, nice and lovely guides (we had 3 guides for 6 participants) who helped us all the way through the trail, taking pictures and making sure we felt comfortable and safe. And riding on that incredible, huge and white beach together is something we will never forget!
The horses were very well taken care of by a young and passionate team, so thank you Papiesfontein for this!!!

The best horse trail/ride in Jeffreys & surrounds. Highlight every-time we go to this part of SA. Horses well cared for, gr8 volunteers and staff in season. The experience...is absolutely worth it.

Absolutely amazing!
Dec 2019 • Friends
I had the best time at Papiesfontein. The first half of the the trail is though the beautiful landscape of South Africa and the second half is even better: a 6km long stretch on a lonely beach where you can take a canter or gallop. Absolutely loved and highly recommend it.

My advice is that you tell the managers/guides in the beginning what you feel comfortable with and what kind of horse you’d like (slow, forward going etc.) so that they can match you on the horses.

I have done the trail many times and will always come back for this amazing experience!

A big thank you to the kind staff/guides who helped us throughout the ride.

One of a kind experience!! Stunning!!
Nov 2019
Absolutely amazing! I genuinely had the best experience ever... I will recommend this to all my friends! The tour guides were very kind, knowledgeable, always helpful and briefed us very well beforehand. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather and being able to ride a horse on the beach with unforgettable views was truly one of a kind. They were very accommodating (they gave me a gentler horse, because I said I was not a very experienced rider at all) and made sure that we had an amazing time. Worth every single rand. I would recommend to wear tight pants (to minimize chafing). We started off the trail in a slow clam pace and then when we got to the beach (you do warm up to it by then, I promise!) we could speed up on the long stretches of beach (did I already mention that they were absolutely stunning!!!!!)
I honestly thank all the staff so so much for the lovely experience and the amazing photos (which the guides were happy to help take), we will definitely be back!!!

An accident waiting to happen
Jun 2019 • Couples
We went on this ride yesterday afternoon- I am an experienced rider and had my own horses at one time in the UK and my partner is a total beginner. The other 4 people in the group were also beginners. This was a scary and dangerous experience in which we were all galloping out of control along the beach for a considerable length of time. I needed all my skills to keep my horse away from the mayhem - my partner was actually quite frightened and kept getting soaked from the sea as he couldn’t steer his horse away from the waves.
The group of horses kept taking off and Jan, the guide, gave no one any instructions on how to slow down, steer, take up the reins, not even basic stuff like keep your heels down, to perhaps feel more secure.
We were told on the phone that the ride would be one hour together in walk and then I would split off in some way to have a faster ride. However the guide, who spoke very little English, seemed to think we should all experience as much time in canter as possible - my partner definitely didn’t mind a bit of trotting but felt cantering was far too much and in this situation, we were all in danger and I am thankful no one was hurt.

The other point I would make is that the horses are not as well cared for as I would like to see. The bridles were old and stiff and the bits were rusty. We rode in trail saddles which were at least a little safer for beginners.

There is no doubt that the landscape and dunes and the ocean are breathtaking and of outstanding beauty, but the reckless way in which this ride was conducted is, in my opinion, an accident waiting to happen.

Need to prepare customers better
Jun 2019 • Couples
This was a great experience but people in our group felt uncomfortable.

On arrival there was no briefing at all on what to expect, no advice on how to control a horse at all which left beginners scared.

Here is what to expect
1. Don’t wear a backpack - horses don’t like them
2. You will trot, canter and gallop, be prepared to be out of your comport zone
3. You will be going on the beach and in the water you will be getting wet
4. Make sure any smartphone, keys, wallets and camera are well secured before you hit the beach the horses will take off as a group
5. Taking photos while on horse back is challenging and difficult
6. The guide did not provide any photo taking opportunities I.e stop for a bit.

The experience was amazing galloping a horse on a beach through the water was exilerating.

A high level of fitness is required even for beginners
