This trail is quite rugged & definitely designed for 4x4 with good clearance & power. A bit of travelling on rocks on the river bed & once past that..some serious climbing up the mountain. Not scary (im not a regular 4x4 trail fan). Beautiful views from the top but not much to see on the Kabouga side until quite high up. The decent is steep but manageable but check to see that no rain has fallen in the area. Lots of little streams crossed along the way & is very slippery in wet conditions. One can only travel from the Kabouga side to Darlington but not the other way around. Quite narrow in places & not easy to turn should you need to. Saw a few Kudu, but not as much life as we would have liked to see. Bush very thick so visibility not easy on the lower portion. Cost us R550.00 to do the route & has to be booked through Addo Park.

Nice 4 x 4 trail with great views saw some nice birds. As mentioned before it's not a super taxing 4 x 4 route and the first half is very easy. Then you climb some hills to get the views and 4 x 4 is very handy.

Despite the great views the map it rubbish. Sanparks should provide a proper mad with all the detours on it you can follow the sofa that say 4 x 4 route but all these detours come up and you have no idea where they go or how far.

It should also be made clear its a 45 min drive from camp to get there. Then when you end it's a big drive back to adobo main camp if that is where you are based about 1 1/2 hours. If you can book to stay at the dam or be prepared to drive back.

But great trail we really enjoyed it.

The beginning is quite daunting, hang on tight and take it slow. After the first narrow and bumpy bit, you will enjoy beautiful views and a better drive. Need high clearance!!!!!! It doesn't take long, 4 hours easily but you should take a picnic to enjoy in the shade. We saw lots of animals so drive cautiously. Well worth it!

Following our recent visit to Addo, we ended our trip by doing the Bedrogfontein 4x4 route which stretches from the Darlington Dam in the north to Kabouga in the south. This is situated in the northern (Darlington) section of Addo. We entered the park near the Darlington Dam and travelled in a south easterly direction along a single jeep track. Sanparks have recently closed the route to traffic going in two directions - as the road is very narrow in places. We were treated to beautiful views of the Darlington dam as we travelled over a steep pass. The route passes through a variety of vegetation due to the mountainous terrain and deep ravines. One can almost feel the history of the area and imagine how tough battles fought there between the Boers and the English must have been, due to the then almost inaccessible terrain. We had many sightings of various antelope, ostriches, jackal - and birds of prey. There is wildlife in abundance but no elephant. Apparently leopard spoor have been seen but never been sighted. On our descent once over the highest peaks, we came across an open area which clearly is a picnic site - or perhaps was used during the battles as a campsite. There we discovered the partially hidden remains of what was might have been a supply wagon. Before reaching the Kabouga House (self-cater), we had to cross a river bed for which one undoubtedly needs a 4x4 vehicle with high ground clearance. The house was spacious with every need catered for. Lghts were solar-powered. We so enjoyed our braai outside in a lapa - the remains of an old dam. We also enjoyed going for the short walks up and around the house after our 6 hour drive from Darlington. The following morning we only had a short drive of approximately an hour back to the Kirkwood Sanparks Office. We mostly enjoyed the peacefulness of the route as we saw no other vehicles. This allowed us the time to enjoy the beauty of the beautiful landscape.

If you happen to be around, do not limit your visit just to the standard game reserve where most people go. The track offers wonderful scenic views particularly in its second part (if you start at Mvubu campsite). Most of the track can be driven even without 4x4 switched-on, there are however a few ascends where you will appreciate also a low range. The track does not even require too high clearance of the vehicle, unless you want to try the river crossing or more demanding detours, both optional however. Do not expect as much animals as in the southern part of the Addo National, as most of them are well hidden in the bush and you will mostly spot them only when they are quickly crossing the road in front of you. Sleeping in Mvubu Camp is also amazing experience and it is surprisingly well equipped, including a flushing toilet.

The Kabouga 4x4 trail is just that a no frills wonderful wildreness experience through some truly spectacular scenery and mountain passes. Most of the route can be comfortably completed in normal drive mode but once one enters the Bedrogfontein section it becomes necessary, at times to engage low ration 4x4. There is a charming cottage offering comfortable accommodation, decent braai ( barbecue) facilities and a really cool swimming pool in the shape of an old round reservoir complete with water leguaan ( monitore lizard) and other facinating creature. As you climb out nothwards, one passes the place where General Jan smuts ambushed the following British troops during the Anglo-Boer war and spectacular Cycads that cling to the mountain slopes, rising up to the summit where stunning views both north into the interior of the Little and Great Karoo as well as south to the distant Southern Ocean can be enjoyed before decending into the arid Karoo and Lake Darlington. Lovely experience with a wide diversity of animals and scenery to keep you enthralled
