The road to Watchung Reservation is so beautiful. The place is so very nice with nature exhibiting all its beauty. There is a lake very near which is so serene and calm. There is lots of parking available and this place is a must see...More
OK, I've been hiking in NJ since I was a kid (DH only since we met - lo these 30+ years).
We hadn't been to Watchung Reservation in over 25 years, so I downloaded a trail map from the Union County web site. It shows...More
This is a large park and so if you go away from the area around the trail center a lot of the trails are in poor repair, washed out, downed trees, etc. Off of Skytop Dr. there is a bridge that has been collapsed for...More
The Watchung reservation has many miles of hiking trails which are fairly well marked and there are maps showing you where to go. Park also has horse riding, a nature center, large playgrounds, and a lot of offerings for families and individuals a like. I...More
Quite simply in our nations most densely populated state you can get outside an enjoy nature Garden State style. Fishing, hiking, and observing wildlife are just some of the green activities you can do, Enjoy!
We have been visiting this place for decades and its still a favorite place to get away from hectic everyday activities. Take the kids on a hike and walk in the woods, you can horseback ride and fish in the streams too, nature is calling you.
I come here with friends to walk the trails. It's quiet... The occasional jogger comes past or other people hiking the trails. We always get lost and end up somewhere new. The trails aren't marked well marked and some are narrow, so try to remember...More

Yes, dogs are allowed into the reservation though I am not sure that is the case on the bridal paths. There is a Trailside Science and Nature Center with a website - however Trip Advisor won't allow me to include that site address in my answer, they are located within the grounds of the park and its is maintained and operated by the Union County Park Systems. Their phone number is (908) 789-3670I and I would assume they could answer any and all questions you might have about the reservation.

Terry, I do not recall a visitor center - There is Trailside Museum which is a small building at the western edge of the park with displays on the topography and wild life but I do not recall a cafe. It is no where nearly as sophisticated or as well kept as the parks and woods in the UK. I also recall very little refuse in the UK parks I have visited over the years and this one can be quite messy particularly if the bears tip over the trash bins near the lake - still, I do enjoy hiking there.
PS- my mother is from Bristol and I still have family in the UK . Be there next week.
Best wishes for your trip.
