I am not an old fossil yet!
Dec 2019 • Couples
I must be honest I wasn't sold on the idea of visiting the fossil park when we were told this is a must do by the owners of the Blacksmiths cottage in Hopefield.

We wanted to stay local today and experience everything there was to see in the immediate surroundings.

Fossil park it is today!

Hmmm...... we were pleasantly surprised. Fascinated by the information and the great find between in the beauty of the west coast makes this an outing well worth it.

Everything great must be rounded off by good coffee.

We couldn't decide on what to have with our coffee so we had it all.

One day we will be fossils too.

Cheers to a great outing.

A must do!
Nov 2019 • Couples
We were very impressed with this well laid out museum in a modern newly constructed buildingand with the guided tour to see fossils of mostly extinct animals in situ in the ground. R100 for both is very good value. It's well worth 2-3 hours of your time.

Mind boggling experience

This park with fossils dating back to 5 million years ago is a must to visit especially now that they are in the new modern premises. Apart from the exhibitions and excellent tour guides one can also visit an excellent restaurant.

Fascinating visit to the deep past
Nov 2019
This visit was series of wonderful surprises! The informative and engaging guide introduced us to an extraordinary story that started 5 million years ago, while we stood gazing at the ancient bones of prehistoric animals, still wedged in the earth, as if just uncovered. Thereafter we visited the most lovely museum (one of the nicest I have seen of its kind - and I have listed many), full of beautiful visual interpretations of what we had just heard (including recreations by a range of artists and designers); and then to the excellent restaurant for lunch. Don't miss it, if you are visiting the western cape.. for children, teenagers and adults of any age.

A long, hot drive but worth it.

With the fantastic new exhibition building this has become a much more worthwhile attraction. What was new to us was some extinct animals including the African bear, several hyenas and a short-necked giraffe, a massive thing called a Sivathere. There are no prices available online or put up at reception so make sure you get child or pensioner discount (we didn't).

A very professional exhibit
Oct 2019
The centre is an absolute pleasure to visit.
Exhibition centre is roomy and spotless - so unlike many other exhibits in SA. Signage is legible and in simple language and the depicted animals lifelike.
Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly and we were given the opportunity to be transported to the “dig” in golf carts.
This was a morning well spent

An excellent resource

The Fossil Park is in an old phosphate quarry, and has a museum, restaurant and a fairly large covered area showing the dig with many skeletal remains. To get the maximum benefit from this remarkable place, I would strongly recommend taking the guided tour: it takes anything from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how many questions are asked, and is fascinating. The guide we had was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. This makes a great excursion for a few hours. Kids love it too, by all appearances.

Interesting Place
Jun 2019
The new center is an asset to the WC Fossil Park that includes a museum and little shop. Very interesting to learn about the time that the River was flowing in this area and the high sea level. To think that so many wild life was abundant from big to small, land animals to marine animals. Fossils are clearly visible and a must for primary school learners that learns about fossils in their curriculum and curious adults. You get the change to search for small fossils, and also have an active digging site that might find even more fossils.

New Fossil on the Block
Jul 2019 • Couples
The recently opened Visitor Centre ( a present from Lottery Funds) is quite excellent and comprises a magnificent, spacious, informative and innovative Exhibits Centre and Museum, plus an adequate Cafe and small Curio Shop. The guided tour of the Fossil excavation site was interesting and impressive with a knowledgeable Tour Guide. All the staff we encountered at the Visitor Centre were friendly and helpful.. A great addition to Western Cape tourism.
