We floated this weekend, 4th of July weekend. It was packed and lots of fun. We have floated the Elk river twice both times the Elk River Floats. Good place and great employees, although their check in process is a bit ridiculous. Should be more convenient for those that book online and pay a 5% conscience fee. It’s not convenient at all. Floaters have to wait for almost an hour to get checked in. For those of you that care. The float is fun but really long. The last mile is so slow through really slow water. Next year we will be looking at floating with Two Sons which is only a 4 mile. 6 miles is too long. Took us 7.5 hours. That’s enough time to get drunk, sober up, and hung over before the end of a slow paddle the entire way last mile.

Elk River snakes its way through Southwest Missouri and is the biggest attraction in Noel. You can bring your own canoe, swim gear, etc., and use it for free, or you can rent canoes from one of many local vendors who will also supply transportation if one of your party doesn't want to do the extra drive.

What my dad did on some of our trips was have someone with a second car help out, so we didn't have to pay for a canoe plus bus ride back, but if you only have one vehicle, you can use the services.

Dad's method: Drive to where we planned to stop. Leave one car there. Drive back to starting point, park car and launch the canoe(s) etc. Once we got to our destination, the car was there so someone could drive back, get the main car, and you can imagine the rest.

The point of reviewing the river itself is to remind everyone that Elk River is free. There are many free launch points. You can find them easily once you get to Noel.

If you want to just float around hungover and/or drink, it's fine. But if you're wanting a few turns, current and action, then you'll need to drive further south to the Jack's Fork. The Elk is just kinda dead.

If floating in a river full of algae, litter, drunk people, and old women wearing pasties is your idea of fun then this is the place for you. We could not get out of this river fast enough. It's trash. Not because of anything the river has done but because the humans that use it are trash. I witnessed people throwing beer cans and cigarette butts into the water. Nice way to preserve our natural resources! No one patrols this river....that is clear. At one point on the float we passed a group of about 8 women all over the age of 40 wearing nothing but glitter pasties on their breasts. Way to keep it classy. It's sad and I wish people weren't so horrible but unfortunately this is not a river worth visiting unless you fit the description of the above people who float here.

The Elk River is much better for floating than it's Okie counterpart, the Illinois. It's prettier, cleaner, and people actually take the time to clean the debris out of it so you're not constantly getting caught and tangled up in downed trees. We'll always go to the Elk River form now on.

Many outfitters / campgrounds located in Pineville and Noel. Rock beaches to stop and rest. Water never gets too deep or too fast during an average summer. CLEAR water unless a major rainstorm just came through. Recommend families to float during the week as there are partyers most weekends. Can be low during dry summers.

Beautiful and leisurely! But impossible on weekends! A five mile float takes four-five hours!
Bring hats and sun block! A wonderful family tradition for over forty years!

I went on Memorial Day with a group of friends and it wasn’t as busy as I thought it would be. They supplied everything and the layout of how to get there and organization of it all was fine. However, the staff we encountered were quite rude and we were over charged with our raft and had to go in and fix it after many minutes and angry people waiting behind us. Rafting isn’t for everybody and can be quite boring if you don’t like just soaking up sun while being stuck in the middle of the river. It took us about 5 hours due to how many times we stopped to swim! Bring plenty of sunscreen!
