Forchtenstein is really worth a detour. We budgeted 2 hours for the impressive fortress and spent half the day. From a military point this fortress is essentially intact, looming over the surrounding countryside. The military significance should be obvious to all. In the living quarters...More

Burg Forchtenstein is a beautiful castle in a picturesque mountain scenery. According to advertisement leaflets and tourist guides, the exhibitions and collections inside seem great, but that's something I can't confirm because these leaflets and guides refer to a closing time at 0600pm... but forget...More

It's a castle, not a palace or a mansion, so don't expect any rose gardens or large courtyards there. There's no much to see from the outside, except from the castle itself and it's walls. But it does look impressive standing on the high hill...More

This is a must see castle if you visit the eastern part of Austria or the western part of Hungary. The castle is in a beautiful location with a spectacular view to the east, north-east. Parking slot is available nearby the castle for free. There...More

Our family enjoyed the tour very much. It was in Hungarian. (This part of Austria belonged to Hungary , so many people speak Hungarian here. And many tourists arrive from Hungary of course.) The castle became an armory, so you can see weapons (guns, swords, armour,...More

Greta place to visit in any time of the year, although make sure you are warmly dressed in the winter, the castle is not heated. Quite nicely guided.

We took city bus from Vienna Central Station to this southern castle. Easy trip with wi-fi across nice countryside, it's a real outing. The castle is small and serious! It is a War Castle, not a palace or even nice lodge for the royalty. Castle...More

I honestly recommend the castle visit. Large history of the Esterhazy family, family treasures and historical weapons from the 17-19th century in a very nice, well preserved castle. Do not miss the panorama terrace, from where you have the best view to the region!

I can strongly recommend you to visit this castle of the famous Hungarian noble family Esterházy in the Burgenland province of Austriat, at a ca. hour-long car drive from Vienna. It's one of the few castles that the enemy could never occupy and therefore every...More
