II it does date back to the 900's it explains why the details are so interesting. The Gregorian chants of the monks are suppose to be the last place where you can still hear them. So glad we went there. Rachel from Houston

The old abbey is amazing - especially when you catch the monks singing. The old building is amazing.

Stopped by for a visit. Beautiful old abbey. It was abandoned for many years but then reoccupied in 1992. Since a year ago, the occupants are a community of monks.

Beautiful old abbey, but unfortunately the monks are no longer there, so there is no more chanting. Interesting little shop next to the abbey.

A well preserved monument worth visiting. The setting is beautiful and the scene with the church just below the village of Castelnuovo d' Abato is really inspiring. Around the church are olive trees having in front small signboards with spiritual phrases. At night the abbey...More

The place is beautiful located in the middle of a hilly isolated area. It was packed for the Easter mass. It was quite an experience.

A beautiful religious site where to enjoy either the peacefulness it evokes and/or the beauty of the surroundings.

This was a beautiful mid-evil cathedral to see if you’re in the area but I wouldn’t make a special trip to see it. It was nice to look around and I especially enjoyed relaxing in the grass surrounded by olive trees after the visit. I...More

We hadn't planned on stopping here, but were intrigued by its dominant physical presence in the area. Lucky we were, as this site was deep with history and import in the region. It has been well preserved and its history is well explained by audio...More

I’m not sure, but there are no monks living on site anymore. If there is mass, it will be as a tourist attraction rather than the real thing.

Hello, the abbey should be open daily 10:30-12:30 and then again 2:30-6:30 pm But the chants are not live anymore ( but recorded) since it was a small group of monks who returned to their order in France. Last I had heard... More
