The Citadel of Blaye is impressive and was a massive fortress. It is definitely worth visiting when you're in Blaye. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this impressive tourist sight is free.

We went into the citadel after lunch for a quick look round. I knew nothing about the place but was bowled over - reminiscent of Carcassonne without the crowds. Plenty of places to visit and see and some interesting shops just inside the entrance. You...More

We visited the Citadelle for a second time. Always enjoy the trip out to Blaye. Very well preserved. Check times for special escorted tours of the tunnels. Otherwise, it is still a nice place to visit and see the fortifications. Views are really great. Several...More

A bit of history, great views of the Gironde but also restaurants, shops and a hotel. It's a big area, plenty of space to stretch little legs.
