Stopped here for breakfast. Visited here 25 years ago. One of the few places thats kept in pristine condition, preserved, very well maintained, neat and tidy.
We walked the town looking and marvelling the antiques and all old machinery. Everything is kept so well. Its like a time zone change into an era long gone. A beautiful tribute to pioneer miners, their innovations, the hardships of their travels, their families and documenting their history for generations to come.
Well done to these committees and communities.
My only grouse was that the overseas tourists were not encouraged by their guides to support the locals, talk to the craftsmen and takepics and showcase them
Locals are desperate for monies please support them

I enjoyed waling from upper town where the hotel is to down town.
Just don't walk to the cemetery it's a bit far and steep. We did and it was a workout.

The only down side it that you have to buy entrance tickets at the info center in the upper town area, then you can enter the old building.

The street vendors are not so bad anymore and signs have been put up that the max asking price for a car wash. But be kind and tip the car watcher.

The town it self is in a good condition. Some maintenance have been done.

I definitely want to go back and stay a night or 2 in the famous hotel but on peak time when it is a bit more busy.

Probably still worth popping in if you are passing by but has lost its authenticity that it previously had. Hopefully it can restore some former glory.

Do yourself a favour and stop at Pilgrims rest for lunch. It’s a sweet little old town, not much to do, but a walk through the little shops, buying some fudge and eating a good lunch is worth it.

We hadn't visited Pilgrims Rest for some time and were very pleased to see that many of the buildings have been repainted and restored since our last visit - the town has definitely regained some of its old world charm and character! We love that the buildings along the main road have been kept in their original style and transport you to a different era of gold mining, general dealers and enjoying a drink at the Royal Hotel.
It was also good to see that some of the firm favourites are still there, like the Royal Hotel, Pilgrim's Pantry for pancakes and coffee and the local pottery shop. However, we were also disappointed that most of the general dealers are selling cheap junk from China rather than the hand-crafted, artisan goods they used to.

Keep an eye on the time when visiting everything closes very early!
The old town is clean and neat. Building are well preserved. Everything was closed when we arrived at 16h00 but we spent a happy hour wondering about without spending any money.

This is a charming town to spend some time in. We drove into it one evening and then returned the next day to spend more time in it. We spent half a day here, having breakfast and then walking through the town.

You can buy a combined ticket for all the museums at the visitors center (for a very nominal amount 15-25R if I remember right)and my sister and I had great fun popping in and out of the various houses turned into museums

Took a random decision to revisit after some 6 years and all the recent bad publicity. The local community have done a great job in restoring the town to its former glory. So pleased to have visited again. Ate at my favorite spot, Pilgrims Pantry. Food and service excellent. Must try the Moerkoffie and home made pies.
The Post Office with its museum room containg old telecoms technology was very interesting.
Well worth going off the beaten track up and over the panoramic Robber's Pass to visit this renovated, original Gold mining town of the 1880's.
I'll be back!
