Visitors can access the castle but there are a few restrictions and visitor guidelines due to it being located in a busy working area on the Estate. - James4 contributionsGreat location to visitMidhope Castle is a great location to visit. A rich history and beautiful setting. It is also great for any Outlander fan. My American clients were very happy with their visit. The staff here are wonderful. James, who works at the ticket office was extremely welcoming and friendly. He was very knowledgeable about the castle and Outlander which pleased my clients. He was very helpful and took time out of his day to chat to us and give us information and advice regarding our tour. James is a great ambassador for Midhope Castle and gives Scotland a good name as tourists experience some good ol' Scottish hospitality with him. Will definitely come again.Visited April 2023Travelled on businessWritten 24 April 2023
- AburelBucharest, Romania2,514 contributionsOutlanders fans onlyThe place is like in the movie - deserted part. It’s value its only for that. Nice setting but nothing to visit. By the gate is just a sign for the Outlander fans. A caravan by the gate sells tickets and cheap magnets with the show. Otherwise a nice place with a nice drive to get there.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 July 2023

Can be middy so dress appropriately. No access to inside but full access to outside and grounds. Recommended for all but especially outlander fans. It was very quite and an awesome experience. I was very surprised it was destroyed on the inside. That part was sad.

What a treat for my Outlander fan Wife, it is not normally a public attraction but you can visit under certain circumstances. It costs but well worth it just to walk around there.

Arrived close to closing time and the fine folk employed to charge people £6 per person to enjoy the Outlander experience let myself and son inside to grab a few photographs.
Other than the building itself and the entrance nothing else equates to the illusion created by the recording company.

Nobody in the entire world is a bigger Outlander fan than my wife - so I knew that when we were in Scotland that we would HAVE to visit Lallybroch Castle.
Located about 20 minutes outside of Edinburgh off the main highway - it was a very pleasant drive to get there, though once off the motorway, the roads got a little narrow.
There is a very small parking lot located beside the ticket booth - so get there early if you want to make sure you can get a ticket and a spot to park. If a couple of tour buses show up you will be out of luck.
The actual castle is historically known as Midhope Castle and although construction started in 1478 - it was renovated and reconstructed many times up until 1678.
Unfortunately - its just the outer shell that you can visit and the archway entrance. Apparently inside all of the floors have collapsed or are too dangerous to walk on.
There are a few outbuildings as well but they are all in ruins as well.
Still - this is a fabulous place to visit just for the romance of it all. My wife was sooooo happy to be able to see this place - just as she clutched every upright stone across the UK hoping to be transported away to the arms of her favourite Highlander. HAHA!
I believe we bought our tickets for 6 quid each and the ticket booth also sells postcards and the 'key' to Lallybroch to keep as a souvenir.

Ok so sure, it could be better. BUT ITS LALLYBROCK!
Here is what is good already: It's just there. You are only here because you love Jamie and Claire and this is Lallybrock. You can wander all around and take a billion pictures from any angle. Go behind, pictures. Stay for 5 hours, pictures.
What you need to know: Due to Scotlands Right to Roam law, any path or trail that is not directly into someone's garden can be walked upon. Up behind the house is a trail that eventually leads to another trail and to the creek....and you should go on all of these
What isn't good: Obviously cannot go in the building. The gift shop/shed is WEAK. They should be selling major merch, but they aren't. Also, the other tourists can be annoying. If everyone is just patient and good humans then everyone will get their pics and have their time. But people are selfish and in a hurry.
When a bus pulls in.....it sucks.

We are planning to go via train from Edinburgh to Midhope castle, do I need to get us train tickets ahead of time or does the train run regularly? Also how far out of town is the castle?

We are taking a Timberbush Outlander tour on 4/13/20, which is Easter Monday. Will Midhope be open that day?

I have no idea. I suggest you look up Hopetoun Website. Midhope is part of this estate and they will know when it is open. If it’s not on the website, they will have a contact email or phone number you can contact.

Hola Patrissss...

I would really like to go there, but not in a tour. We would also not like to hire a car for just going there and back, but I guess none of you traveled with public transport? It seems to be quite complicated starting from Edinburgh. Thanks.
