Beware wild BOAR
Sep 2018 • Family
The Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge is a remote and secluded refuge on Lake Ponchartrain between Slidell and the causeway south of hwy 190 near Lacombe. Some others have mistakenly posted reviews here of the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area. I understand it is also a very scenic place to visit, but it is northeast of Slidell off I-59, not here. Also, we were in the Bogue area on a Sunday so the visitor center on the highway was closed, not the entire refuge. I had hoped to pick up trail maps there and we had been told at another visitor center that there were a lot of wild boars out right now, so we didn't venture too far from the car. It was wild, scenic, and remote and worth a much longer visit. My younger son, who has disabilities, accidentally said he was disappointed he didn't get to see a wild hore. (removed the w to pass tripadvisor sanctions). We corrected him after we had a good laugh.

Good and quiet

It was nice to get out in a natural setting. I was surprised at how much wildlife I saw in a short time. The boardwalks are a nice way to get back in the area. Saw some nice Cypress trees in the swamp.

Beautiful nature walk through the swamp.

I recently ran across The Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Nature Walk. It is right off of Hwy 59, between Slidell La and Picayune, MS.

When you first drive in you will see a lake, but follow road to left and park at the very end. There you will follow a gravel trail until you reach the boardwalk. Welcome to the swamp area. I love it. The sounds of wildlife is relaxing. One recommendation is to be sure and bring your mosquito repellant.

If you enjoy nature it is worth the drive and walk.

The pics and scenery with kids was fun. The gators were awesome, and showed how fast they can move. The whole family had a blast.

I never knew this was here untill I read about ti on trip advisor. We took the trip over to see it and was quite surprised at the beauty even thoughyou are right near the interstate. Had a picnic lunch and walked a little.

Went here after hearing so much about the Cabins they had for rent after being remodeled after Hurricane Katrina.

This is one of the most beautiful natural areas in the South Louisiana area. Foot trails and the cabins are just wonderful. The Cabins are rented first come first served or reserved. We did not stay in a cabin this was a one day look and see trip. It was very much enjoyed and it is such a Natural location. I plan to go and stay and follow-up on this.

Great place. I stayed in one of the two tent sites. Knew it would be an interesting stay when the clerk showing me on the map started circling a site that was off all the roads. Took the main trailhead about half way, stopped due to parts of the path being closed. Lots of up close swamps.

I love to fish here. Always something to see whether it's a turtle, beaver or some type of beautiful bird
