Jewel of the Boere war

The Boer War, also known as the Anglo-Boer War, was a significant conflict in South African history. It lasted from 1899 to 1902 and had a profound impact on the Boer population, including women and children. Many remarkable stories emerged from this period, showcasing the resilience and resourcefulness of Boer women and children. One notable aspect was the Boer women's involvement in supporting their husbands and soldiers in various ways, such as providing food, nursing the wounded, and even participating in combat in some instances. Women played a crucial role in maintaining the Boer commandos' morale and spirit throughout the war.Another incredible aspect was the survival strategies employed by Boer families, particularly during the British scorched-earth policy, which aimed to deprive Boer guerrillas of supplies and support by destroying farms, homesteads, and crops. Despite the harsh conditions and brutal tactics, many Boer women managed to keep their families together and even outsmart British forces at times. One of the most famous stories is that of the Boer concentration camps, where thousands of women and children were interned by the British. Despite the dire conditions in these camps, Boer women showed remarkable resilience and resourcefulness, organizing schools, hospitals, and other community activities to maintain a sense of normalcy amidst adversity. The oral history passed down through generations within Boer families preserves these incredible stories of survival, sacrifice, and perseverance during one of the darkest periods in South African history. These tales continue to inspire and educate people about the courage and resilience of the Boer people during the tumultuous times of the Boer War.

It wasn’t open on a Saturday, but I did manage to take a photo from the street.

It is the oldest house that belonged to Jean Pierre Pellissier of the Paris Missionary Society in 1832.
