The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates the nation's second largest public transportation system and covers the City of Chicago and 35 surrounding suburbs. On an average weekday, approximately 1.6 million rides are taken on the CTA. The CTA is an independent governmental agency created by state legislation. We began operating on October 1, 1947, after acquiring the properties of the Chicago Rapid Transit Company and the Chicago Surface Lines. On October 1, 1952, CTA became the sole operator of Chicago transit when it purchased the Chicago Motor Coach system. Our mission “We deliver quality, affordable transit services that link people, jobs and communities.”

Other than to an from Airports, I only walked in Chicago, everything is pretty easy to reach in the downtown area. The L and other train routes really seem to work.

We stayed near to the Cumberland stop on the Blue line. We are suburb people who drive everywhere. When we arrived at our hotel we parked our car and it didn't move for a week. We bought a week pass for $33, which made the...More

Best way to get to and from both chicago airports. Inexpensive, clean and always run on time. Can get very crowded during peak times, but still the best option.

The CTA is affordable and convenient for getting around Chicago. I used the L to get to most sights from the Skydeck to Wrigley Field and my hotel was two blocks from the Merch Mart station on the Brown Line. The bus lines are very...More

Solidly good transportation from Midway Airport to the Magnificent Mile area (near The Loop). Some stops could really use more signage; we got turned around on our way to a concert and a local person helped us.

For at most $3 a trip, the CTA subways will quickly get you around downtown Chicago, up to Wrigley Field or O'Hare, or down to White Sox Park and Midway. The trains are a bit old, but clean, and the electronic boards accurately tell you...More

You will need to find a station attendant to get you through the turnstiles. Children from 7-11 pay a reduced fare.

Given the time , I would strongly suggest a taxi or some other comparable ride service. The CTA is great during the day, but I would not travel on it at that hour. Not worth it to save a few dollars.
